Medical Fund For Nick

Donation protected
On January 2, 2019 Nick was admitted to the ICU with a life threatening infection which required emergency
surgery and a wound vac. He was discharged on January 15, 2019. He returned to the ER on January 18, 2019 for a wound check.

On February 15th Nick was admitted to the ICU as a result of a status of seizures. He was discharged on
February 18th.

March 8th brought him back to the ER, fighting yet another infection.

From May 4th through May 6th Nick was back in the ICU having suffered yet another status of seizures.

On May 10th Nick was admitted to the ICU as a result of a status of seizures and fighting infection from Aspiration Pneumonia. Life saving measures were needed as Nick was unable to breathe on his own.
He was intubated and on a ventilator. He was discharged on May 23 rd.

Later, on June 12th through the 14th Nick was back in the hospital with wound issues from the operation in
January. He was fighting another infection and he was also in Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

On August 18th Nick said he wasn't feeling right. Thankfully he knows his body. His ammonia level was extremely
high, a side effect from one of the four anticonvulsant drugs he takes. Thankfully the issue has been resolved.

Nick's most recent visit to the hospital was on September 20th. He suffered a seizure which resulted in an head
and elbow injury.

As many people know, living with chronic illness is difficult to say the least. Throughout everything he has been
dealt in life Nick learned how to advocate for himself. He is strong, resilient and compassionate. His goal is to
work in a field where he can help others who are in similar circumstances. He understands how chronic illness
affects a person and their families. Nick is an inspiration to everyone who knows him. He never gives up.  Despite
his physical limitations Nick perseveres.  He appreciates each day because he understands how drastically things
can change from one moment to the next.

Some background information: Nick was diagnosed with Epilepsy twenty-one years ago at age two. His seizures are Refractory (uncontrolled). Nick has been on almost every medication available yet his seizures remain
medication resistant. Nick has never really known life without seizures,  medications and side effects.

At age 17, Nick landed in the ICU in  Diabetic Ketoacidosis and was diagnosed with Type1 insulin dependent
diabetes. He spent two weeks in ICU. Nick quickly learned how to manage his diabetes through nutrition, close monitoring of blood glucose levels and insulin injections.

Epilepsy, Type1 Diabetes and medications have taken a toll on Nick's body, causing him to have Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease. In an effort to avoid dialysis and a transplant waiting list Nick was aggressively treated with
more medication. On New Years Day Nick underwent emergency surgery as a result of a life threatening
infection brought on by that medication. He spent 15 days in the ICU. Since that time Nick has been in and out of
the hospital 9 times.  Sadly,  Nick's kidney function has significantly declined since October of 2018.  He now
faces two major organ transplants, Pancreas and Kidney. As a Stage 4 borderline 5 CKD patient transplants
would be the best case scenario. The hope and goal is to avoid dialysis if at all possible.

Our family lives a modest lifestyle on a very limited income. There is no money set aside for a rainy day. We live day to day on a fixed income. We live in a small apartment with no frills or extras. We don't own a car.  Any setback can mean the difference between paying rent, buying food or meeting medical needs not covered by insurance. Sadly
this is the reality for most people living with chronic illness and their families.

We are grateful to everyone who has offered encouragement, prayers and donations. Thank you for your understanding, generosity, love and support. If you are able to help please do and we ask that you share Nick's GoFundMe so that other's will know they are not alone their own journey.

Thank you.
