Help SONKU Support Black Artists

Donation protected
In the wake of the current awakening and the announcement that city of Philadelphia has proposed a budget of $0 allocated for arts and culture  , which will completely terminate the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund we are asking that you consider donating to sustainably support SONKU in our fight to decolonize arts, support Black artists, and build enduring institutions.

SONKU  lives in the tradition of the Harlem Renaissance, Négritude, Black Arts, Hip-Hop, and Neo-Soul movements as a collective and was founded in autumn of 2018 by a Black woman poet to serve as a creative and collective space for Black and POC artists, which sits at the intersections of collective based art and holistic healing and is currently run by a predominantly Black team servicing a predominantly Black community. Our team is currently made entirely of hardworking volunteers who care deeply about the work of liberation through creativity and maximizing resource accessibility for the community. Now more than ever, spaces like these are vital for Black artists who rely on us to provide resources, community, and a space to be themselves.

Over the past year and a half, we have successfully hosted biweekly writing workshops, networking and open mic events, and curated two literary magazines featuring and servicing the work of hundreds of artists and creatives in the city. You can learn more about our work here .

All donations will help support our goals of:

- Publishing more Black and POC writers and visual artists.

- Hosting art shows to showcase the work of Black and POC visual artists.

- Hosting networking events and open mics for artists to connect, build community, and collaborate.

- Expanding into speaker series so that developing writers and artists can hear from and meet those established in their career paths.

- Expanding into more community work surrounding literacy and creativity in Philadelphia. (long term)

- Expanding further into providing nation-wide and international resources (our magazine already services artists internationally). (long term)

- Expanding our team and hire and pay Black, Indigenous, and POC creators. (long term)

- Applying for 501c3 status. (long term)

These are all things we'd like to achieve within the next 1-3 years, and your support can help us get there.

Things to remember:

- Any amount counts. Whether it's $1 or $1000, any amount donated aids us in becoming one step closer to our goal.

- We are always here, and we are always appreciative of donations. Even if you can't donate now, we are always open to receiving donations and they can help support us in publishing, doing community work, and hosting events and programming throughout the year. Don't forget about us!

- There are other ways you can support by following us on Instagram , joining our mailing list (bottom of page or pop-up box), or most importantly sharing the fundraiser. The more people it reaches, the more we raise. This is true for all our content, the larger the audience the more people we can reach and aid. We also have a cashapp $sonkucollective gofundme isn't accessible to you.

- Volume II of our magazine is debuting soon. Following us on Instagram or joining our mailing list is a great way to keep up with progress.

Things to note: We are not yet a 501c3, which means we are unable to apply for grant funding and your donation is extremely appreciated because it is one of the only sources of income available to the organization (for the time being, SONKU is a college-based organization and we have yet to receive any funding from our home university and currently remain fully self-funded with hopes of support in the future). All funds are strictly used for organizational purposes in endeavors to best support emerging Black and other POC artists.

Remember, all efforts count. Thank you for boosting and supporting Black creatives and Black voices.
