Corbett Family

In May of this year the Corbett Family was broadsided when Dave Corbett suffered a massive inguinal hernia that caused extensive damage and subsequent severe complications. After the immediate life-threatening situation was managed by local doctors, Dave had to wait several months until his health stabilized enough for him to travel to Charlotte for surgical specialists to repair the damage. They had to reconstruct his abdomen (make room and try to put everything back in place), remove 80% of his colon, and repair the hernia. He has dealt with multiple infections and required three blood transfusions. Most recently doctors had to remove his 2 drains due to inflammation, and he has another surgery scheduled for December 6th to insert a new drain. Dave and his wife Karen spent 2 ½ weeks in Charlotte while he was undergoing surgery and recovery, plus several trips back and forth for testing and assessments.
The Corbetts are a loving family who have been active in their community for years. They are long-time members of the Parish of St. Eugene in Asheville, where they have taught children’s church, Sunday School, and Youth Group. Dave worked at Biltmore Forest Country Club for many years, and most recently worked for Publix. Karen works as a substitute teacher and has spent much of her adult life working with special needs children. She volunteers with Special Olympics, and at Glen Arden Elementary School for events like Kindergarten Registration, and Field Day.
Even with insurance covering his surgeries, Dave’s path to recovery has been and will continue to be a long and expensive one. While the Corbetts are grateful to Dave’s employer for keeping him on so that his insurance coverage would not lapse, he was unable to apply for unemployment. He was not a full-time employee so he did not have disability coverage. Dave has not had a pay-check since May. Unfortunately, the time required for being Dave’s primary caregiver, and traveling for his hospital stays and medical appointments, has also greatly reduced Karen’s income. They are paying insurance premiums out of pocket, their savings have been depleted, and they are struggling to pay Dave’s medical bills as well as their everyday living expenses.
After years of helping and giving to others, Karen and Dave now need our help. They would never ask for it for themselves, so it is with love and understanding of their humble natures that we, their friends, are asking for them, and setting up this fundraising campaign on their behalf.
Please give what you can, and please spread the word. Whether or not you can contribute financially, please contribute by sharing. All funds will be transferred directly to the Corbetts.
