We are 4 Volunteer RAIR Trainers from the Victorian SES - Sunbury Unit:
Andrew Patience 4 years service,
Jarrod Bell 7 years service,
Matt Simmons 2 years service,
Ben Stanford 17 years service.
On the 30th of May 2019, 4 Volunteer Rescue trainers from the Victoria State Emergency Service – Sunbury Unit will be travelling from Melbourne to the United States of America. This trip will enable these 4 trainers to undertake Rescue training in areas that are either rarely or not available to volunteer rescue operators in Australia. These areas include Heavy Vehicle training and rescue involving alternately fuelled vehicles such as, electric hybrid and hydrogen.
Upon arriving in the United States our team will spend some time with the Dallas Fire & Rescue Department in Dallas, Texas. On completion of our time with the DFR our team will travel to Covington, Georgia near Atlanta. While in Covington our team will undertake training as part of the North American Heavy Rescue Symposium (NAHRS). The NAHRS 2019 is the largest gathering of rescue operators of its type in the world. Attending the NAHRS 2019 will give our 4 rescue trainers the opportunity to work with some of the world’s best trainers and learn about heavy vehicle rescue among other topics such as rescue involving agricultural machinery.
On completion of the NAHRS, the team will travel to New York. While in New York our team will be spending some time with the New York Fire Department (FDNY) and also plan to visit the Ground Zero memorial to pay our respects to the brave people who were killed on September 11, 2001. On completion of our time in New York our team will travel to Spring, Texas near Houston. While in Spring the team will be taking part in a course known as the Advanced Training Program. In this course we will gain knowledge and experience of alternatively fuelled vehicles. Upon completion of this course our team will be returning to Australia.
Once back from the United States our team will be facilitating training sessions to pass on the knowledge gained during our time in the United States. These training sessions will be open to all members from VICSES, CFA and Independent rescue organisations within Victoria. This will allow the information delivered to filter out to as many rescuers as possible. This would provide a benefit to the Victorian community that far exceeds the skills gained by our team members.
In order for our members to attend this training it will cost $5,700 per person, that’s is a total of $22,800. As a pre-requisite to join the team, each member had to be a trainer and pay the entry fee of $922 for the NAHRS. This leaves an outstanding amount of $19,112 to ensure the trip goes ahead. All four of the Volunteer Rescue trainers attending are willing to pay their own way if needed. We all believe the knowledge gained will be worth the personal expense. However, as this project is being undertaken for the benefit of all Victorian road users, we would be grateful if the community is willing to assist with covering the costs of the trip.
