Volunteer Trip - Nea Kevala Refugee Camp - Greece

I am very excited, honoured and privileged to be able to go and volunteer with the grassroots organization "We Are Here Centre" in Nea Kavala refugee camp in Northern Greece. As someone who has always volunteered and has a heart in helping those less fortunate, I am especially humbled to be able to go and support the refugees in Greece.
The documentary Human Flow by Ai Weiwei was an eye opening to the refugee crisis. I was shocked to learn that the average time spent in a refugee camp is 26 years - yes you read that right!!
I will provide my services in whatever capacity I can including teaching english, trauma informed yoga classes and just to bring a smile and warm hug. I know that this is a chance to make a difference in the lives of others and to remind humanity that we are all connected and are ONE. I look forward to the chance to grow and serve in this once in a lifetime opportunity.

A community and learning centre in Nea Kavala refugee camp.
Since the closure of the huge unofficial camp of Idomeni and the opening of smaller, tucked away camps, the refugees who reach Greece are no longer splashed across the headlines, but the overseas wars and persecutions have not stopped, and people are still arriving – risking their lives for the chance of safety in Europe.
Many of the people here have been through extremely traumatic experiences and are now faced with a lengthy wait in anonymous conditions. A lack of support, routine, information and occupation can take a big toll on people’s health and wellbeing.
With a library, study area and classrooms, a women’s space and an open community space, We Are Here creates an opportunity to learn, create, socialize, share, and build knowledge, confidence and connections. Despite functioning inside a military-ran camp, this project remains very independent, and we have been able to set up and run the centre in a way that takes into account the voices of those on the ground.
I have started this page to raise funds for my expenses (flight, accommodation & meals - approximated at $1500) as well as to raise funds for We Are Here. By donating to this fund, you are impacting not only my life but also the lives of many who have escaped a life hoping for a better future.
