Hello, my name is Lisa Ann Leonard and I am honored to introduce you to The Orbit Village Project and the incredible work being done by them in Nairobi, Kenya.

Cyndy B. Waters, a good friend of mine, founded The Orbit Village Project in 1995 with the sole mission of “rescuing kids.” It is a 501c3 and is dependent entirely on donations. The Orbit Village Project supports over 500 students of all ages through high school, and supports a 70-child orphanage, a Girl Child project, feeding programs and two churches.
In the last 25 years Cyndy’s mission of “rescuing kids” has produced astounding results.
Orbit School: Educates K-12 students. Students, as well as staff, are provided with hot nutritious meals free of charge five days a week – 1,300 meals provided each day.
Orbit College Program: Scholarships send Orbit School graduates to colleges and technical schools.
Orbit Child Refuge: Provides shelter, food, protection and mentoring to hundreds of children in severely impoverished situations.
Orbit Village Library: Well stocked and open to the community.
Home-Based Care Programs: Brings hope and a chance for a brighter, cleaner and healthier future to local Kenyans who are actively engaged in raising their standard of living to improve their lives and care for their children.
The Orbit Village and Joshua Orbit International: Helps hundreds of families survive a broken generation due to cultural change. At Orbit they learn how to maintain their heritage but rid the culture of devastating practices such as female circumcision and child brides.
Mathare Valley Project/Basket Weaver’s Project: After the post election violence in 2007, Cyndy’s team went to the slum of Mathare to see how they could help the community where thousands of people lost their homes and many lost their lives. They started serving in an IDP Camp (Internally Displaced Person) and started a church and eventually a community based project to support the women who are the Mathare Basket Weavers.
This campaign will fund:
This campaign will fund initial construction of a multi-purpose building in Niborkeju, just outside of the Orbit Village compound, for a small village of the Lekilit Samburu people. The structure will serve as a community center, school and church. Currently, they have no building in which to gather.
I will be working there in February to begin building the structure’s foundation. I will help manage and make the interlocking soil-cement blocks used for wall construction. Funds will be used to support my stay and to purchase the soil and interlocking block making machine(s). Though labor intensive, this block making system is eco-friendly, cost effective and the blocks can be dry-stacked requiring no mortar. This process greatly increases the speed of construction.
Who am I?
I have spent more than a decade in the construction industry after exiting a corporate career in sales and marketing. Ever since I can remember, I have had a wrench, a hammer or a paintbrush in my hand. No surprise that I also became a professional painter and “handy-human.” My passion is building, whether I am painting, repairing or remodeling. I am happiest creating safe, efficient and beautiful spaces for people.
I also believe in “giving back” and using one’s talents and skills to serve those in need. I have had the extraordinary privilege of working on many projects with Habitat for Humanity in the United States and in El Salvador. When Cyndy asked if I would help her at The Orbit Village Project, I knew I had to find a way...now, more than ever.
I have loved the thought of Africa since I was a young girl and fell in love with Elsa the lioness from the movie Born Free. As an adult I have learned about the people and cultures of Africa and South Africa through the eyes of friends, world leaders and a community of humans who keep us connected as a global family. From those who teach us that we are more alike than different and who show us by example that kindness and connection are our greatest paths to peace. The Zulu word, “Ubuntu” means “humanity.” Often it is translated as “I am because we are.” It is because of Ubuntu that I am going to Africa and because of Ubuntu that I live in the heart of service wherever I go.
I am grateful for all who offer support and encouragement on this GOFUNDME page. With your help we will create significant impact for the children and communities of The Orbit Village Project.
If I raise more than the goal amount, funds will be used for other urgent Orbit Village projects.
