IVHQ Volunteering Abroad Fund

Hello! Thanks for coming to see more about my goal to volunteer abroad. Through International Volunteer HQ, I've decided I want to go to Brazil and Sri Lanka to help out those who need it. More specifically, I want to do community development in Brazil for 8 weeks and Buddhist temple restoration in Sri Lanka for 6 weeks, starting this August 18.

Let me first pose some questions to you: Are you doing reasonably well financially? Are you content with what your community has to offer? If you so choose, is it an option for you or your children to partake in community events or classes? Now, as a Brazillian, how would you be inclined to answer?

In 2 years, the summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro. This only adds more importance for my need to go to Brazil. I'll be working with local organizations to help build a stronger and more effective community in the capital where the focus has been shifted to spending millions on sports complexes instead of its citizens. The city - let alone the country - is in dire need of better standards, and I want to start to help implement those by developing a community built on good foundations. I have been fortunate enough to live in cities that are very community-oriented, and I have seen how it positively affects the city as a whole.

In Sri Lanka, the sacred city of Kandy has many Buddhist temples that are falling apart. Renovating these temples may not seem like that grand of a venture, but if you are of a religion, you can understand how important it is to have a safe place to worship. Even if you aren't, I hope you can relate to having gone to some other institution, like a youth centre, where you felt welcome. In this project, both of those topics are addressed - beautification and rebuilding of temples that are hundreds of years old, and therefore deeply ingrained in Sri Lankan culture, and helping the temples establish community centers for the youth of the village. I have understood the significance of a place of worship, and have been both an attendee and volunteer of a youth group, so I know that working towards - and attaining - these objectives are a meaningful investment.

In my dollar goal of $9000, I have factored in all of the program costs and other expenses for the trip. Since volunteers work for free, I have to pay for lodging and food - otherwise the program would be entirely free. It would be an understatement to say I've never had much money, but through that I've learned the importance of every cent received. That is why I want to continue to share my abilities, but this time on a big scale and for people who I will likely never encounter again. Any money that I receive and don't use will be donated to charity.

I have the chance to provide opportunities for people who would never otherwise dream of having access to community programs. I'm asking that you, and everyone, donate a mere $5 - just a small little bit out of your donations fund. If 100 people do that, then I will have $500 which pays for 3 weeks in Sri Lanka, and it starts to add up quickly. Thank you so much for your consideration, and if you choose to donate any amount, thanks x923780.
