Hello, my name is Dennis Rich and I'm an award-winning print journalist with 15 years experience as a writer and editor for the Warrensburg (Mo.) Free Press, the Raytown (Mo.) Post and the Sedalia (Mo.) Democrat.
The purpose of this campaign is to help fund and support a year-long, five-part investigative journalism series examining the ongoing impact of climate change on the city of New Orleans, southern Louisiana and the U.S. Southern Gulf Coast region.
Funding will be used to secure a self-publish website, acquire software/hardware and cover research, reporting and transportation costs.
Global climate change is projected to have a devastating impact on New Orleans and surrounding communities throughout the remainder of the century, with much or all of the city lost to sea level rise by 2100.
While many communities may not see a direct impact from climate change for many years, the Gulf Coast is already experiencing those affects in real time, with Louisiana reportedly losing an average football field's worth of coastline every hour.
The core of this project will be five 3,000 word stories based on original reporting detailing the concerns of major stakeholders including representatives of economic, governmental, conservation, community and individual concerns.
In addition to the five core "backbone" stories, I plan to generate additional multi-media content including video, podcasts, photo galleries and feature stories preserving the stories of rural and indigenous populations and communities directly affected by environmental changes.
Ar the end of the project I plan to use the content as the basis for a book, as well as regular follow up reporting to update the original issues raised.
