The Sushi Surfers are a team of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who are going to the Odyssey of the Mind World Championships in Ames, Iowa! It will cost over $12,000 to take this incredible journey. Will you help?
The Sushi Surfers won 1st place in their Regional competition and 2nd in the State contest, competing against dozens
of other teams. They are honored to represent JY Joyner in competing against some of the best teams from around the world!
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition that engages growing minds from elementary school through college. Teams compete to solve their problem with style, humor and efficiency. You can watch a short video about the program here
The Sushi Surfers were tasked to build a tower made only of balsa wood and glue that could withstand significant weight. The tower itself could weigh no more than 15 grams – approximately the same weight of 15 paperclips. The Sushi Surfers' tower held over 400 pounds - the most weight of any team!
They learned so much about architecture and engineering, really exercising their creative muscles in building their tower. They tried many different models before they found the winning structure - without adult intervention.
The kiddos also learned valuable presentation skills, gained self-confidence and honed their ability to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks through solid teamwork. It has been a transformative experience for all 6 of them!
