vivian chen support fund

Donation protected
This fund has been set up in memory of  Vivian Chen who passed away last week on April 4, 2018.

It was created by some of us who felt that in lieu of flowers, helping support Vivian's family in monetary form would help alleviate and offset any further financial burden her family may be shouldering in putting Vivian and her memory to rest.

She had a debilitating stroke all alone in an empty studio one Sunday morning three weeks ago, and never awoke again. Incapacitated to make decisions on her own affairs, Vivian passed away quietly three weeks later in hospital. It is not fully understood what kind of cognizance a person in a coma has, and we hope that in the interim period she had suffered little, and for those of us who have had opportunity to visit at her bedside, that our heartfelt words and messages were conveyed. Vivian Chen was 72

Over the past two decades, often at different times, many of you and I, have known Vivian as a coworker and constant fixture in the studio. We each have our stories and memories of her - that she prepared our checks and let us know about our holidays and benefits. We remember how she gave her advice and opinions frankly and often unsolicited... How she would often turn off the studio lights in the middle of our deadlines, berate anyone who left their desk lamp on and watched solicitously over the upkeep of the studio kitchen. Some of us may have noticed that she loved her plants, kept them well watered, healthy and in sunlight. She loved to eat - taking pleasure in her meals and in unguarded moments often laugh out loud at some observed irony in the world. In recent years at the end of a workday, she can be heard chatting with the gaiety of a young schoolgirl over the phone to close friends or seen engrossed with her headset on, captivated by some drama on her screen.

Yet for many who have not known her outside of our studio walls, Vivian had also lived a quiet private life for the most part in Long Island and had had -  like many of us - a house, a dog, a garden to tend to, someone to care for, a few close personal friends and personal interests to occupy her time.

She spoke of a yearning to travel to the places she had heard about, locations of our studio projects. And later she did travel - she learnt she enjoyed travelling and took pleasure in whatever opportunity she had to do so. The cover photo shows Vivian six spring seasons ago in Switzerland with her favorite inseparable red beret cap. In recent years she had taken more regular trips to Taiwan to spend invaluable time with friends and family. A much younger Vivian we never knew is revealed to us from photographs that show her in the fullness of youth and of life - the future before her as she prepared to move on from Taipei into the next chapters of her life in New York City.

There is no minimum or maximum donations being asked for and no clear idea what an appropriate sum target may be, other than an assumption that considerable expenses have been incurred in the past few weeks, and would have to be shouldered and settled one way or the other. The donation or giving of is therefore entirely optional, discretionary and left to individual choice.

At the time of of Vivian's funeral this Saturday, we will present a white envelope to Vivian's younger brother and sister containing whatever we have raised to assist.

For any of you who may wish and are able to attend, Vivian's funeral and memorial service will be held:
