The Violet Hour at the Fringe Fest

Great News! The Violet Hour will be part of one of the largest fringe festivals in the country! For six years now the KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival has brought over 350,000 people and over 2100 performances together. It is described as a festival to connect and empower artists, audiences, venues and community to celebrate, explore and inspire creativity via an annual multi-genre performing arts festival. This year, from among submissions by numerous applicants, I have been invited to present my one act show, The Violet Hour . The Violet Hour explores the career of internationally acclaimed soprano Leontyne Price – from the early beginnings of her career to her final performance of the opera, Aida, at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1985. To be a part of the Rochester Fringe Festival in Rochester, New York on September 14, 2018 is blowing my mind. Last year’s Fringe Festival 2017 broke all Rochester Fringe records to date including a 15% increase in visitors welcoming over 78,000 people.
As an artist, I am choosing to create new opportunities for myself that add value to the operatic landscape and shed light on important figures in its history. I also hope to create an opportunity for other artists to perform this piece and share the talent of this extraordinary classical singer. From its inception, The Violet Hour has been about wanting to present something more than a recital that honored Leontyne Price. It is an opportunity to educate and expand people’s knowledge of the importance of her career and contribution to classical music. I spent a good deal of time writing this work and taking classes to create a piece that would be significant. I presented the idea to different colleagues who helped make this show what it is today. It took the help of many people, so I could not and cannot do this alone.
The Fringe is an unbelievable opportunity that needs support in order to make The Violet Hour a critical success at the Festival and to secure future productions. While I am excited with the chance to be viewed by new and broader audiences, there is substantial cost in producing the show and I need your support to make it spectacular!
