Dear family, friends and potential friends!
As many of you already know over the past 20 years I've been battling renal disease which, as of October 2017, resulted in kidney failure. I am currently on dialysis three times a week. I have two options, dialysis the remainder of my life or a kidney transplant. There are many reasons for this life changing decision; I have chosen to have a kidney transplant.
A kidney transplant is either through a living donor (preferred) or a deceased donor. I am currently on the wait list as "active" for a transplant at New York Hospital. The wait time is 5-7 years for my blood type, blood type is A Positive. Dialysis 3 times a week for 5 – 7 years is physically very demanding; a transplant is preferred.
Why the request for contributions ...I am able to be wait listed in other parts of the country such as; Kansas, Nebraska, and Fort Worth Texas. These are a few of the targeted areas where the "wait time" can be as short as 11 months. My insurance only covers the NY tri-state area and only the NY tri-state area. My insurance company will not cover my trips to other states to be evaluated and considered for transplantation.
All of these centers require that my care giver accompany me to these evaluations, and again my insurance company will not cover these expenses. In the eventuality I am called for a transplant at a center outside of the New York area, I and my care giver are required to spend the next month (30 days) in that area. This is required to closely monitor for infections or rejection of the transplanted kidney. This is a very expensive situation and thus the reason why I am asking for your contribution. The funds will address and offset the cost of traveling to 3 centers for evaluation and if a match is found the 30 day monitoring in that location. Of course, time is of the essence...the sooner I am able to be evaluated the better my chances are of being short listed for a kidney transplant. Funds not utilized will be donated to The Kidney Foundation.
