A DONATION IS A VIBRATION: ASKING FOR SUPPORT TO DOCUMENT AND SHARE THE 50th VILLAGE DRUMS OF FREEDOM FESTIVAL IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

About the Village Drums of Freedom Festival

The artistic culture of Trinidad & Tobago has historically been a celebration of liberty and freedom, challenging oppressions and defying restrictions, and hosting a spirit of creation, discovery and reinvention.

Village Drums of Freedom was a central figure in the cultural revolution of the 1970s in Trinidad, which occurred along with the political revolution that fought against the residues of colonialism, and the injustices of imperialism and corrupt political systems, and it continues to carry this culture forward today.

Founded in the late 1960s by Gerald “Drums” Achee and Nyron “Roots”, Village Drums of Freedom is a free improvisation percussion band carried by a core membership yet encompassing more than a hundred djembe players, as well as dancers, from all over the world, most of them members of the Rastafari Movement.

Since 1968, the band has held a five day, grass-roots, free and public festival in Saint James, Port of Spain, the week after carnival. The festival emerges from the collective efforts of hundreds of people, centered on food, music and dance, with a special focus on supporting the artistic growth and consciousness of youths.

Going Strong 50 years - Creating a lasting Memory

This year, February 21st to 24th 2018, the Village Drums of Freedom Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary. We feel that this momentous occasion deserves a record.

Village Drums of Freedom invites people into a journey of artistic, self and relational discovery. As fortunate visitors who have embarked on and been transformed by this voyage, we want to give back by creating of a visual and auditory open window into this powerful and historic universe.

We are returning for this year’s 50th anniversary, with the necessary equipment to record sounds, words and images. Our intention is to then piece them together into a picture that is alive, transports its audience, and that leaves a record of this important piece of life.

 Let’s do this!

In order to do this we need your support...

We hope you will be able to contribute to this, help in the creation of this piece and record, and eventually explore it with us upon completion!

We need a minimum of $2000 in order to cover costs of travel and basic technical equipment to gather footage. This appeal for help and solidarity is directed towards getting funds by February 1st for this initial stage. After returning home from the festival, we will begin looking for resources to edit and distribute to open this window to  anyone. We will be grateful even if you just share this as widely as you can through people and networks that you think would be interested in offering support.

Give thanks ~ One Love
