Village Legacy Project Expansion

Donation protected
The Village Legacy Project, created and primarily funded by the Bank Street BIA, seeks to document the history of Ottawa’s LGBT community through the VLP’s interactive walking tour, available on a free mobile app (iPhone and Android) and its Web site at www.villagelegacy.ca.

Our existing tour lets users visit sites significant to Ottawa's queer community, both old and new, see archival photographs and watch interviews from some of our most significant community leaders to learn about the people, places, topics and events that helped shape our community.

The tour currently has eight documentaries on topics ranging from the HIV/AIDS crisis, hate crimes and suicides, the history of Gays of Ottawa, the lesbian and feminist movements in Ottawa, the decriminialization of homosexuality and the persecution of LGBT people in the civil service during the Cold War era.

We would like to complete another ten documentaries to round out the history of our community for the walking tour, to help preserve our history, as told by the activists who lived though it all. This GoFundMe of $5,000 will enable us to produce another three of the ten total documentaries we intend to complete, on topics such as the history of Pride in Ottawa, EGALE and equal marriage, the We Demand protest, trans rights, the Club Baths raid, Centretown Pub and the leather community, and more.

We already have 36 interviews conducted and filmed of almost 40 community leaders, and have amassed thousands of archival photos from a variety of sources during a year's worth of research. The money raised from this GoFundMe will go towards the labour needed to transcribe existing interviews, write and edit a documentary script, and for a professional video production company to edit the materials to create a final video documentary.

The Bank Street BIA wishes to expand the existing Project and is looking to crowd fund, among other potential avenues, to supplement its funding. Your personal or corporate donation will help preserve the history of our community for future generations to learn from and be inspired by.
