Helping the Karen People - Myanmar

Hi Everyone!!!

In the process of becoming a Jewish adult, I am performing a Mitzvah Project to help others. Mitzvah means “Good Deed” in Hebrew and a Mitzvah Project is something many rising Jewish children do as they pursue their B’nai Mitzvah.

For my project, I have chosen to help the Karen people of Myanmar.

The Karen people are being persecuted for their religion and beliefs. Alongside the Rohingyas, they are denied citizenship and refused common rights such as education, jobs and medical help. As tensions rose, the government in Myanmar created a military campaign against these minorities.

I had the opportunity to meet with some Karen refugees and when I heard their stories, I felt I needed to help.

They told me that their people have been forced to run from the government who does not believe that they are equal and wants them out of Myanmar.

They fled from Myanmar and spent many years in refugee camps in Thailand. Some were born in the camps and spent all their childhood not knowing how life is outside those camps.  Some had never attended a regular school or had never used a regular bathroom nor a kitchen.  After that, they were settled in USA as refugees.

My first idea was to help the youth group of refugees here in Phoenix but after a couple of meetings, they made it clear that they would prefer to help their families who are still living in bad conditions in Myanmar.

Every year, the youth group raises money and sends it to their villages. They are very proud of that, but they are only able to send one to two thousands of dollars each ear.
What I want to do is to double this amount and help rebuild the village of Saw Mu Plaw  and give its people some hope.  I hope that I can use this special moment in my life to spread the word and help this people.

I have created a GoFundMe page for my project in hopes to help them. I am happy to be the first donor of US$100. I  am hopeful that this note finds you well, touches your heart, and motivates you to help too. Every little bit can change these villager’s worlds. Please take the small effort to make a big difference.  Thank You!

The money is going to be transferred directly to families at the Saw Mu Plaw Village.

Thank You!
