VIKAN MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC

I teach band at Vikan Middle School in Brighton, CO, a fast growing Denver suburb with a small town feel. Vikan is a school full of passionate educators and awesome students, but we currently do not have the means to purchase additional instruments and supplies to keep up with our growing music program. The 27J school district, the district to which Vikan belongs, has the lowest funding of all Denver metro school districts.

When I started at Vikan Middle School in 2015 we had just over 100 students in music, and now, just 2 years later, we have over 200 students in our program and are continuing to grow. We desperately need to purchase more instruments and sheet music to continue to provide opportunities for all music students. 

One of my main goals has been to make sure that money is never a reason a student can't participate in music. In order to be successful, we need to maintain an inventory of instruments for students to rent at a cost that is lower than local music stores. We also need to update our music library to provide students with engaging opportunities to learn and grow. $7,000

At Vikan we also have a pep band that plays at home sports games during football, volleyball, and basketball seasons. We play music that excites both the student athletes and audience members. We would like to purchase additional music to add to the experience for our students. $2,000

We also have a mariachi band featuring instruments and vocalists who engage with learning traditional folk music in Spanish. To enhance this experience, we would love to purchase aspects of costumes that would be reused such as sombreros, belts, and jackets of various sizes. $1,000

We need these instruments and supplies as soon as possible to help our students get the most out of their learning experiences at Vikan Middle School.
