We Believe Education Will Save the World

Donation protected
Have you ever wondered what percentage of your donation to a non-profit actually ends up funding the cause? We know we have, and that's why we started Vidya Nepal; so we can ensure that 100% of every donation ends up supporting these kids' education.

When you educate a child, you make an investment in the fight against poverty, hunger, child mortality, gender inequality, overpopulation, and the global climate crisis.

When the world is facing an existential threat,  education isn’t a nice to have, it’s a moral imperative.

Overview
As a small group of inspired change makers, we are looking to direct our resources where they can make the largest impact.

Our support is targeted towards families from very poor communities or lower castes that simply cannot afford to send their children to school.

In partnership with the Children's Aid Center, a Nepali NGO, we are raising funds to support secondary education (grade 6-10) for students at Shree Ram Secondary School  in Koshidekha, Kavre District (about 3 hours drive from Kathmandu, Nepal), a school supported by the community and generous donations from various NGOs and INGOs.

After finishing primary school (grades 1-5), many children do not have the option to continue on to secondary school, due to financial constraints. Without that opportunity, their ability to contribute to their society, and the world at large, is severely limited.

Our mission is to give these children that opportunity, and to bridge the gap between primary school and the workforce in some of the poorest and least developed countries in the world.

How You Can help
Become part of creating a better world and make a difference no matter where you are.

1. Sponsor a Child
Provide a child with the invaluable opportunity of knowledge and route out of poverty through education.

2. Make a monetary Contribution
You may make a contribution of any amount you like. There is no amount that is too small. Every dollar helps!

3. Raise Awareness
Many of the donations and funds will come from complete strangers who heard about this campaign. Please spread the word!

Children represent nearly 40% of the population in Nepal; investments in Nepal’s children today will define the country’s progress tomorrow.

What We Need & Where Your Donation Goes
Help us create change that lasts a lifetime for children in Nepal! When you sponsor a poor child, you do far more than just provide funds – you empower a child who has been robbed of an  opportunity many of us take for granted. Through your contribution you give a child the chance to realize their rights and reach their full potential, thereby transforming their lives, their communities, their country, and the world.

The first $50,000 raised will be put towards getting a group of 50 children through secondary school beginning in March 2021, as well as equipping them with all the major items required by the school.

The $50,000 will be used as follows:
The average cost of one school year is $200 for 2 terms.

– Each student needs a uniform, including: pants/skirt, sweater, a school bag, socks & shoes, and books & pencils.

– Students will also be provided basic personal hygiene items such as soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste.

– School fees including educational tour expenses, certificates, prizes and clothes to Dashain (the longest and the most auspicious festival celebrated by Nepalese people. People return from all parts of the world, as well as different parts of the country, to celebrate together. All government offices, educational institutions and other offices remain closed during the festival period).

SPONSORSHIPS
– A $200 contribution  will support a student for a year of schooling, we will pair you with a student and, if you wish, pass along updates from his or her teacher on how he/she is doing throughout the year.

– A $1,000 contribution will sponsor a child through all 5 years of higher education. We will pair you with a student and, if you wish, pass along updates from his or her teacher on how he/she is doing throughout each year, until the final exam is completed.

– If you choose to contribute any other amount, your donation will be added to a shared  pool for the 50 students that we are aiming to support for their secondary school starting in March 2021.

Can't Donate? That's Okay... Raise Awareness!
We hope you'll donate to our cause (even $1 makes a huge difference!) but if not, there is another way you can help: share this campaign link with your community, family, friends – anyone and everyone you think might be interested!

This is a private campaign and donations made are considered to be personal gifts and are not guaranteed to be tax-deductible. But, you can always check with a tax professional to be sure. You will not be issued a tax receipt from GoFundMe. Thank you in advance for your support and your generosity.

BACKGROUND
Wedged between the mega-countries of China and India, rich in cultural heritage, with the magnificence of Mount Everest and the Himalayas as a backdrop, landlocked Nepal remains one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world.

Over the last 20 years, Nepal has made significant progress in numerous aspects of their education system. However, the quality of education is generally still poor, and is characterized by high dropout rates, a lack of girl-friendly facilities, and few suitable learning facilities.

An estimated 30% of Nepalis live below the poverty line – around 80% of people live on less than $2 USD per day. Due to crippling poverty, many families from very poor communities or lower castes simply cannot afford to send their children to school, as they are required to work from a young age to support their family. Girls in particular are often deprived of a full education due to gender discrimination.

For many children, education would be the path out of poverty for themselves and their families– except they lack the funds to take the first step.

Primary education (grades 1-5) typically begins at the age of 6 and lasts until the age of 10. The second official level of education is the lower secondary level, which comprises grades 6-8. The upper secondary level consists of grades 9 and 10. The completion rate in lower-secondary education stands at 69.7% (UNESCO 2016), and drops sharply to 24.5% at the upper-secondary level (UNESCO 2014).  At age 16 and at the end of grade 10, students take the Secondary Education Exam (SEE), formerly known as the School Leaving Certificate (SLC).

The SEE/SLC exam is the ultimate and only passage for every single Nepali child in their educational journey towards betterment of life. This is a national exam every child in Nepal must participate in to complete 10th grade. A successful SEE/SLC result is a requirement if a child wishes to further their education in Nepal. With this certificate, a hopeful child can transform into a contributing member of society and support their family. The exam is among the most important and most difficult evaluations in Nepal. Failing to pass effectively crushes any hope of advancing towards a career in Nepal, and thus, it is aptly known as the “Iron Gate”.

ABOUT VIDYA NEPAL FUNDRAISER TEAM

A few years ago, Surya introduced me (Ann) to the Children's Aid Center (CAC) in Nepal. Surya, born and raised on Nepal, knew about the NGO through his very good childhood friend, Paul. Paul's mother, Shashi, is one of the beautiful souls running CAC in an effort to improve education in rural schools in Nepal, Shree Ram Higher Secondary School being one of them. The first time I heard about CAC from Surya, I was blown away with how $200 could have such a huge impact!

Both Surya and I have been sponsoring children through CAC for many years. In fact, I have sponsored unprivileged children through many different organizations and in many different countries. However, once I started supporting the CAC, I felt like my money was finally making a difference. There's no "middle man" taking a cut. There are no salaries. The money goes straight to the people who need it the most – the children.

In 2020, after realizing how much of donations went to pay salaries for different organizers I decided to start my own project, Vidya Nepal. It felt more than right to bring in my friend Surya who introduced me to CAC, along with my very good friend, Jesse, who brought the campaign to life with his video production team. Together we decided to raise money and ensure 100% of every donation went to the cause.

Once the fundraiser is fully complete (February 28, 2021), the funds will be withdrawn to San Diego County Credit Union by Ann and then wired directly to Shashi Ojha with the Children's Aid Center in Nepal.

Once the money reach the Children's Aid center it will be distributed as follow:

$200 = Nepali Rs ~22000

1. School Uniform =Rs 2000 (2 times) =Rs 4000.
2. Stationeries =Rs 1500 (2 times) =Rs 3000.
3. Toiletries =Rs 1500((2 times) =Rs 3000.
4. School Bag =Rs 1000 (1 time) =Rs 1000.
5. Shoes & Socks =Rs 1500 (1 time) =Rs 1500.
6. Wool Sweater =Rs 1000 (1 time) =Rs 1000.
7. Festival Clothes =Rs 1500 (1 time) =Rs 1500.
8. Raincoat & Umbrella =Rs 1000 (1 time) =Rs 1000.
9. School fees =Rs 1000 (1 time) =Rs 1000.

Rs 17000 is the approximate amount per child. The remaining balance (~Rs 5000) is used towards extra curricular activities such as sports, educational tours, student prizes and gifts for essay-, handwriting-, drawing-, dancing contests etc. and final school leaving exam.
