WHAT HAPPENED?
On Saturday morning, July 1, 2017 about 4:30 am Victor Barragan and his wife Sonia were 'throwing' his regular paper route in Long Beach as a way to earn extra money to support their four children. This includes his oldest son, Angel, who works with his dad for Finley’s, the grounds contractor at the Terraces.
An automobile travelling at excessive speed eastbound on the 91 freeway near the Atlantic Ave off-ramp ran into Victor's truck (possibly from the driver's door side) forcing it off the road into a small ravine where it rolled over multiple times. Sonia came to and felt as if she had a broken foot and/or ankle and was badly bruised, but otherwise was OK. However, she could not see Victor and did not get a response when calling his name. Her door would not open but she was able to crawl out of Victor's door. She hobbled up the ravine to the road to signal for help, and after a time a motorist stopped to call 911 and go back down the embankment to search for Victor. They found him 20 yards away from the truck. So far, there were no witnesses to this “hit and run” accident.
He was taken to Long Beach Memorial where he is now in intensive care. To date, Victor was in an induced coma and has had surgeries for various head, neck, rib, and right wrist injuries. Unfortunately, his left arm could not be saved. He has suffered brain trauma and seems to be paralyzed on the left side, but the doctors hope this will change.
As of Wednesday, July 5, he had not awakened yet and was heavily sedated. He is not aware of his various injuries and the loss of his arm. Prayers, positive thoughts, and caring are all we can ask for and provide at this moment.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
This GoFundMe campaign was created to help defray the excessive costs associated with helping Victor recover. We hope insurance will help relieve some of these expenses, but the remainder will still be well outside of his family’s financial ability. We are calling on the generosity of his extended family, friends, residents, and strangers to help in the following ways so his family can focus on Victor’s rehabilitation and speedy recovery:
