Victor's medical expenses relief fund

My name is Victor Duvernay, Jr.  I'm a friendly, social man loved by his family, friends, and former students.  I love nothing more than watching sports, especially basketball, and getting together with the “fellas” to discuss basketball, time spent at Corpus Christi Elementary School, Holy Cross High School, Xavier University, and most importantly, reminiscing about the men of Kappa Alpha Psi.

I am  a retired Orleans Parish Educator and basketball coach.  My retirement is the result of the devastation to the New Orleans public schools brought on by Hurricane Katrina.  Following my return from Houston, my health slowly began to decline.  I suffered a heart attack necessitating triple bypass surgery.  Some years later, I had to have my small toe on my left foot amputated.  For awhile, I was able to recover and work for a period of three years as a tour guide, driver and chauffuer.  However, during the last year of my employment, I suffered two TIA’s (Transient Ischemic Attack) or mini strokes, and the final health issue, a foot infection, caused me to lose my left leg above the knee.  The combination of the TIA’s, diabetes and the amputation has prevented me from continuing to work as a professional driver.  Unfortunately at the time of my surgery and most recent hospital stay, I was uninsured.  The medical bills are mounting, and my modest retirement won’t begin to address these expenses.

Abbie Molaizon-Fazande, my best friend since kindergarten has assumed the responsibility as my care giver. She has been a godsend.  We have been there for each other in good times and bad, the worst being suffering through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and each of us experiencing the end of our marriages shortly after Katrina.  Honestly, she has witnessed my daily struggles, and is helping me transition from the man I once was, an athlete with two legs, to a man dealing with health challenges and the loss of one of those limbs.  She manages to keep my spirits up and maintain hope and a positive outlook for the future of my remaining, future life.  Other, family and friends who regularly keep in touch offer emotional, spiritual, and physical support. Some of those same friends suggested I try this even though I am not quite sure how it all works. I know I actually need more than what I asking to pay the medical expenses but this is very new to me. Just the process of me starting this page has left me feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for the help and gave me a sense of relief that someone saw me and what I was going through.

I hope you can help me reach and exceed my goal.  I know my family and friends want for me, what we want for all of ourselves, to have and enjoy a good quality of life that I can share with family and friends and not necessarily be burdened with financial hardship.
