On Monday, my cousin Vicky passed away at age 50. That is the most depressing line I am going to write, because there was nothing depressing about Vicky. She was a happy woman with a happy life and great family. She knew how to celebrate what was important to her and our family. For this reason, I’d always looked up to Vicky.
Vicky is six years older than me, a magical age gap when we were kids. She was old enough to always be excitingly ahead, but close enough to relate back. The cousin relationship is a bonus. As my cousin, she wasn’t my sibling but close family. I do not have a Big Sister, so I never fought with her. I didn’t know her faults and we always focused on the good we had in our lives.
We were not similar in our interests or our tastes, but we came from the same stock—her mother and my mother were sisters, the offspring of “Mamita and Papiwelito”—so we understood each other, like all of our Cousins do. More important, we loved each other unconditionally.
Vicky never missed a birthday, holiday or special moment with a phone call and would text me every morning just to say hello. I’m going to miss my dear sweetest Cousin. She was kind in a way that was unmatched by any other. Her selflessness showed no boundaries. Vicky was an amazing cousin and friend.
