Black Art Movements: Retrieving from Ghana's Theatre Archive
Black Cultural Memory Matters
Colonialism has created a subconscious rift between Blacks in Africa and those in the diaspora who find themselves disconnected from our cultural history. This project will address this by creating spaces for re connection. We are building a transatlantic conversation between Africans on the continent and those in the diaspora. SUPPORT US to connect theatre students, practitioners, teachers across 3 continents so we may learn and grow together - producing
a series of audio plays inspired by Ghana's theatre archive and a resource documenting our collaboration.
In Ghana 2019 a dream to unite two worlds came about between Decolonising The Archive (based at the Black Cultural Archives in Britain) and The University of Ghana Department of Theatre Arts, School of Performing Arts,
In a world where it appears, that mainly European institutions and western academics & scholars gain opportunities to funding and access to grants touching on issues that are African or indigenous, it seemed only right to Decentre and find a new world where African/ Caribbean Narratives and issues are re -addressed, mastered and accomplished by African & Caribbean people.
The vision is to create a sustainable digital platform via radio plays that will facilitate a cross cultural exchange and bridge to cultural memory, in order to enable solutions around transformation, engagement and access to African Narratives hidden in theatre archives. The platform will be for those on the African continent, U.S. and here in Britain.

This will provide research, digital / production and support to the young actors, students who study theatre at the University of Ghana, ‘Department of Theatre Arts, School of Performing Arts, who have formed a theatre group to enact the plays from the archive, for radio, in addition it will support the British arm African Tales From The Hip Collective to create a response in the form of digital content/ productions and promote the conversation around African culture, arts and archives via Theatre.
Decolonising The Archive formed a Black Theatre Collective to support Diasporic narratives and also to create a response to the Ghanaian arm of our vision, called African Tales from The Hip. This was done to achieve & enhance the visibility, understanding and impact of postcolonial, decolonial and intersectional practices, histories and theories. It aims to address historical amnesias and contemporary silences.
With your support, we will be able to make this digital platform a sustainable reality. With your support, we will be able to give the University of Ghana Department of Theatre Arts, School of Performing Arts, and DTA/African Tales From the Hip an opportunity to create 2 series of radio plays and cover production costs for a cross-cultural exchange podcast show called Decolonising Theatre (Finding a new Centre). This will be between African theatricians on the continent and African /Caribbean theatricians here in Britain.
