On September 16th Shane was admitted to Harborview medical center in their ICU due to a motorcycle accident. Detectives are still working out the details. He was found do to someone calling in an obstruction in the road, his motorcycle. The police found him thrown about 10 feet away from his bike, we guesstimate that he was laying there for about an hour before help arrived.

His current injuries:
Many facial fractures - too many to list, mostly in his sinuses, and a fracture in his occipital condyle – requires a neck brace

Left side - Fractured scapula, humerus, and clavicle, ribs 1, & 3-9 – maybe requires surgery

Right side – Ribs 1 & 11

Fractures to his thoracic spine T5-T7 – requires a thoracic brace

Both lungs collapsed due to the impact of his broken ribs – chest tubes inserted to allow for draining

On his 2nd day in the ICU they removed his breathing tube, hoping he would be strong enough to cough up the sputum from his draining lungs, and still be able to expand his lungs wide enough to get enough oxygen into his blood. They were also hopeful that they would get him walking too with his new fitted back brace. Early Monday morning the pain proved to be too great and he was only able to take shallow breaths leaving him unable to cough. His lungs refilled with fluid and his medical team decided to re-sedate him and reintubate him to allow them to re-approach his treatment plan. On Tuesday, they decided that surgery to repair his clavicle and humerus would be necessary to restore the structural integrity of his left side. His medical staff is consulting other surgeons as well to decide the best treatment to get his left lung the functioning. Surgery to repair his left ribs is seriously being considered.

He has had many chest X-rays (multiple a day), a CT scan, a full upper body MRI, chest respiratory tubes to allow for draining, blood transfusions, countless IVs, daily blood oxygen levels taken causing them to insert a PICC, and a lot of pain medication.

Shane’s healing process has just begun and there are a lot of unknowns to his future treatment plans. Anything you can donate would be much appreciated as he has no medical insurance.  We thank you for any support or advice you can offer us in this time of need.

Best,

Shane’s family
