On January 22, 2016, Mackenzie was teaching at the community school in La Loche, when a young man came to the school and opened fire, causing multiple deaths and injuries. Naturally, the members of the school and the rest of the community were devastated and turned to each other for support. Given the circumstances, the teachers found great comfort in spending the majority of their time together, so most evenings they would meet at someone's house for dinner and just stay together until it was time to go home to bed.
On January 30th, while Mackenzie and his roommate were out, their house caught on fire, resulting in them losing the majority of their belongings (MacBook, apparel, furniture, appliances, cookware, etc.) Luckily a friend arrived on the scene in time to kick open the door and let out Mackenzie's beautiful German shepherd, Keara!
La Loche is in a very remote location; it's a 6 hour drive to the nearest city, so it's quite difficult to replace everything that was lost.
Please consider making a donation to help MacKenzie through this difficult time.
Thanks,
