Xmas Fundraiser for Children in Piura, Peru

As some of you may know, I recently had the opportunity to visit the city of Piura in my home country of Peru. The visit was part of a mission from the Maryland-Piura Committee from the Maryland Sister States Program to identify ways to develop this bilateral relationship. The Deputy Secretary of State of Maryland, Mr. Luis Borunda, also joined us in this trip.
We participated in several meetings with leaders from the regional government, private and non-profit sector. While we ere able to able to establish some opportunities for international cooperation which are in the works, we could not ignore the extreme poverty conditions in which multiple communities of farmers live in. Thanks to the Rotary Club of Piura, we were able to visit Monte Castillo and Nuevo San Pedro. Both are farming communities outside the city of Piura.
In Monte Castillo, the Rotary Club had recently finished their project which raised local and international funds to build a water plant and provide safe water to the community. They had previously built a community clinic and they continue to work in that area to provide families with brick stoves (coming soon) so that they don’t have to cook on the floor and put their families and the environment in danger. In that visit, I learned about a family with little girls who did not have any books. I was able to buy a few books for them, but the whole community needs support to increase their literacy level.
Nuevo San Pedro is a settlement of families who were relocated after the floods caused by el Nino about 4 years ago. These farmers were forced to leave their land and now they live on desert like hills. You can see the fabric of emergency tents used to build their new precarious homes. I had the opportunity to talk to some mothers who asked for help with toys for their children who did not even have a playground or a grassy area to play on.
The Rotary Club of Piura is organizing one “chocolatada” for each community. Chocolatadas are typical events organized during Christmas time. Basically, a group of volunteers gets together to provide a cup of hot cocoa and a gift to a child in need. We kindly ask for your support to be able to provide sandals to children as well as books and toys. The funds raised will go to the Rotary Club of Piura and will support their holiday activities which aim to provide children with hope and happiness this Christmas (more sustainable projects coming soon!).
