Support Our Sammy SOS!

Sammy has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and needs YOUR help.  YOU can help Sammy successfully treat his cancer and resume his happy healthy life. This is an S-O-S call: Support Our Sammy!

Sammy is a smart, creative, energetic four year old with a silly sense of humor that endears him to everyone he meets.  From the time he was born he has been a picture of health, adorable and precocious.  In April 2015 Sammy’s parents took him to the doctor for a black eye that seemed to come from nowhere. After the black eye did not resolve in week, his doctor asked mom to take Sammy to the Emergency Room for a blood test.

For Sammy’s family, that evening our whole world crashed down on us.  Right from the start the ER doctors were concerned about the possibility of cancer.  He took an ambulance ride that night to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. We all spoke by phone and stood vigil with Sammy’s mom and dad waiting with sick stomachs for a diagnosis.

The official diagnosis would come days later after multiple scans, biopsies and countless blood tests confirming what the doctors suspected and breaking our hearts.  Sammy has been diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, an advanced stage of a rare pediatric Cancer found in children under 5 and in less than 800 cases per year in the US.

We were all devastated as he had zero health problems and no symptoms before the appearance of a black eye -- he is a rambunctious, happy boy.   Everyone is working to help get back to that place and we need YOUR help. Please Support our Sammy!

The words we all hang on to, “it’s treatable”.  Sammy’s Oncology Team at Phoenix Children’s Hospital have a plan for treatment.  Only five days after his admission they started him on chemotherapy and he was also accepted into a clinical trial for a special kind of intense intravenous radiation treatment that will happen this fall in Fort Worth.

An unimaginably tough physical and emotional journey lies ahead for Sammy and his parents. The treatment plan includes a minimum of 5 rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the large tumor, bone marrow transplant, the MIBG radiation treatment, and maintenance treatments for the unforeseeable future.  Throughout the treatment thus far his spirits remain high, he plays and acts silly like always.  He is old enough to participate in his care and accepts his new regimen even though it’s not easy.   He knows that the doctors and medicine are helping to get the "bad guys" out of his body.

Sammy’s mom is his full time caretaker including home care and hospital care.  When he is not hospitalized he requires daily clinic visits that can last most of the day and at home there are many treatments and medical needs that Sammy has daily.  This 24/7 need for care has made it so Sammy's mom had to step away from her job as a prosecutor.

The colossal costs of high deductibles, co-pays, travel and the unknown anticipated costs of the medical trial that insurance may refuse to cover or only cover partially, all while losing half their income is a stress that we:   familyfriendsand strangers can help with.

The SOS – Support Our Sammy, we CAN help with that.

Please help.  Give what you can.  More than that, let others know about the SOS.  Contact your friends and family and send them the SOS

The greater the group the lighter the burden.

In this one way, we can all Support Our Sammy.
