‘Vets in Action’ day started in 2013 with the idea of creating a day when the businesses and people in the veterinary industry could give back to their local communities. The first day, held in August of 2013, was a bit of a trial run that turned into a huge success! Held at Burnaby Veterinary Hospital in Burnaby BC, volunteers from throughout the lower mainland veterinary community pitched in and performed over 25 surgical procedures in a single day! This included spays, neuters, dental cleanings and surgeries, along with a few lumpectomies. Each animal also received a full exam, including blood work. All of this was done at no charge to the BC SPCA. Vets In Action also raised over $1500 in donations for the SPCA.
Right from the start, Vets In Action was targeted to move beyond Burnaby Veterinary Hospital and into clinics throughout British Columbia and perhaps even further than that. For our second Vets In Action day we’ll have two clinics hosting procedures — Kennedy Heights Animal and Bird Hospital in Surrey, BC along with Burnaby Veterinary Hospital. Both hospitals are excited and ramping up for the day. This year we’re hopeful that we can do even more for the animals under the SPCA’s care. Every barrier we can knock down on an animals path to adoption helps!
Money you donate to Vets In Action will go towards helping cover the costs of medications and supplies needed for the surgical procedures. The hospitals are providing the space and equipment, teams are donating their time and multiple sponsors are pitching in to help keep costs low. Of course, if we raise more money than is needed the remainder will be donated to the BC SPCA to help out even more animals in need!
