Veterans Wilderness Haven Repair your Heart & Mind

Donation protected

My name is Lyle and I am fundraising to support all Veterans in need. VETERANS WILDERNESS HAVEN I lived in the wilderness of Alaska for about 8 years. It took time and some effort to finally get to the stage where I was able to make that move. After my deployment overseas during Iraqi Freedom I found myself in a pretty dark place and nothing seemed to help. I was hyper vigilant all the time. Walked around my house with a gun looking out windows and waiting for something that never came. The VA was not helping, I was being medicated and still nothing seemed to help. I self medicated for 10 years with alcohol. I moved to the Bush in a remote part of Alaska north of Fairbanks, Alaska and I was able to find myself. Piece, quiet, no outside interruptions, cut off from cell service, internet, electricity, and running water. My personal experience was my heart found its calm place and I was able to move forward and work on the things that I needed to.
Working with Veterans is a passion of mine and I have been wanting to start up a program for veterans to have an opportunity to go and live in the wilderness, find themselves, allow themselves to find peace in their hearts and in their heads, and just give themselves a chance to heal. Media today plays a very large roll in our veterans continued mental status. Everyday we are bombarded by negative images and a narrative that supports only those that are dishing it out.
By Living in an environment that you must work for your water, electricity, food, and ensure you have enough wood to burn over the winter is just the things that a veteran that is trying to find themselves again needs. Hard work and determination prevails in the end. Each Veteran will have their own experience while living in the bush.
While we would not cut the veteran off completely from society there are things in this world that when it is not available on a daily basis. (Media, Hate, Crime, Family Issues, Daily Struggles from the grind) This provides a purposeful opportunity for positive growth.
In my experience I believe if it was not for the solitude that I sought I would not be alive today. Living in the Bush of Alaska allowed me to heal and regain parts of myself that had been missing since before deployment.
The amount of time a Veteran can stay at Hunt Fish Trap Adventures is the amount of time that it takes for a veteran to be ready to leave.
Our mission is to combat isolation, assist in recovery, enrich the veterans lives, strengthen the bond between veterans and their families.
Funds will be utilized for much of the following:
Housing. Purchasing a property with a main cabin that sleeps 2-3 and has a large dining room that will sit 12-16 Veterans. Preparing and eating our meals together is an important part of supporting the integration process back into a normal lifestyle.
There are 3 Stand alone cabins that will sleep 3-4 veterans comfortably. These cabins have small propane stoves for cooking and a wood stove for heat. Solar power, and running water is established at this remote site. Pumps are used to pump water up from the lake. There is an established shower for hygiene.
Funding for transportation on the lake, canoe, small fishing boats with small motors. Fishing gear
Funding for transportation over land. (4-Wheeler, Side by Side, Snowmobile)
There is a major river near by for some of the best fishing in south central Alaska. Fly fishing is one of the best ways to develop a relationship with your surroundings, the wilderness and the fishing itself is therapeutic. Transportation to the river to haul canoe, floating rafts, Kayaks. Once dropped off at the river we will meet the veteran down river about 10 miles and set up a camp for cooking their catch. Telling stores and sharing our own personal stories.
Professional supports in place in the manner of certified clinicians and counselors.
Ongoing funding will be needed to feed house and transportation to and from the remote cabin site.
