Veterans Victory Gardens

The Veterans Victory Garden is a program supported by Root to Rise, a nonprofit which provides permaculture experiential education and hands-on learning. The program was developed by Hugh Roberts, an intern with Root to Rise and a veteran of the Afghanistan war.  Inspired by the “Dig for Victory" campaigns of World War II when Great Britain and Northern Ireland struggled to feed the growing Military and civilian needs, today Veterans and their families are food insecure, homeless, and facing a very difficult challenge  adjusting to being apart from the structure of the military. The Veterans Victory Gardens supports various veterans organizations by building gardens with veterans, for veterans, in order to provide food, build resiliency and foster community, helping veterans heal and providing educational and sharing opportunities for everyone.  Root to Rise has successfully supported the implementation of the first Veterans Victory Gardens in Poultney, VT and several other veterans organizations from Fair Haven, VT to Littleton, NH have expressed the need to have gardens at their locations.  This funding support Hugh, our intern and veteran, and our program grow and new gardens to be implemented in the upcoming year.
