Vet fund for rescue dog Lazarus

On Friday, June 2 while out on a leisurely walk I noticed something in the ditch.  I walked closer and realized it was a dog.  He at first appeared lifeless, slumped over in the muck.  I called to him, whistled at him and did all I could to get his attention and finally he raised his head.  My heart began to hurt for him.  Looking at the surroundings, there was NO WAY he could have been hit by a car or any accident of the sort.  He was dumped there.  I could not bring myself to call animal services because first he is an injured pit bull.  I called the Largo PD and an officer showed up within minutes. The dog was in the ditch just a couple of blocks behind the police department and was thankful for the quick response.  The responding officer immediately approached the dog and said if he is aggressive he would rather get bit than me, and he continued his decent down the slope of the ditch to the dog.  

The officer was kind, compassionate and was trying to just get him out of the ditch and did not hesitiate in the slightest.  I had a towel brought to him from home and he picked him up and placed him in his cruiser without hesitation and took him to the Tampa Bay Emergency Vet Specialists on Belcher Road where he could get proper care.  

Turns out he has a broken leg and was stangled.  He will need surgery on his leg and continued treatment to recover properly.  I could not let him lay in the ditch and die.  The surgery and all of the emergency care is running up pretty high and I am in no financial position to pay for it, nor is the officer. 

With the help of kind members of the community near and far, we have been able to raise about $1200 but there is still a lot to go.
