Vet Costs for Chloe and Cooper

Donation protected

It's... been a year.
We had to bring both Chloe and Cooper to the emergency vet hospital last night after we discovered they had been eating (a lot) of grapes off a grape vine on our fence. For those that don't know, grapes can cause kidney failure which is life threatening.

We couldn't be with them because of COVID, so we just waited in the car. The vet induced vomiting... it took almost an hour so they were miserable. Cooper managed to eat more grapes than Chloe and of course... chewed them up. Chloe at least seemed to swallow them whole. They each got activated charcoal, an IV of fluids, and a blood test. The original recommendation was to have them hospitalized for 48-72 hours since the effects of toxins can take 24+ hours to show. The estimated cost was $2,000-3,000 per dog so we opted to monitor them ourselves since I can work from home.  This will still cost about $1,000+ per dog.

The first round of blood tests came back and the results showed that kidney function was likely good as of last night. We have both dogs at home now, constantly monitoring them and giving them water and chicken broth so they can flush their kidneys. We have to give them fluid IV's every 24 hours... wish us luck since neither of us like needles. They still need to go back to the vet for blood tests to monitor kidney function. If the test results show kidney function beginning to fail, they will need to be hospitalized at Cornell or Colonial.

All of this after an ACL surgery for Chloe earlier this year and Oliver's bladder issues. Poor babes have really been put through it this year. Our "pets" are really our kids, they each have their own personalities and I hate to imagine a life without them. We have racked up almost $10,000 in debt from Vet bills this year. We maxed out Care Credit and the interest is accumulating on our other credit cards. I don't have a single regret, I would do anything to keep these guys happy and healthy. I feel fortunate that we were able to get them cared for, some people are not that lucky and have to make much harder decisions for their vet care.

Justin and I are both very stubborn, and being perfectionists... don't like asking for help. I finally decided to swallow my pride and ask for help because we aren't the only ones that love these  furry goof balls. The old saying "anything helps" is so true.

Also, can we talk about how EXPENSIVE the Vet is?
