Beginnings

In the spring of 2017, artist/painter Emily Rankin and multimedia artist/technologist Meason Wiley met up to discuss a possible collaboration centered around live painting and sound art.

We were both very interested in finding ways of creating a unique performance experience that was both interactive and improvisational - one that allowed us to explore the idea of a true "conversation" between artists of two different mediums.  Using a combination of new technologies such as sensors, color tracking, and blob detection, we were able to create a system where both Emily's gestures, as well as the canvas itself, became a musical interface. This gave Emily the ability to control, adapt, and even generate sound while she painted.

Additionally, we developed a method for communicating during a performance through means of sonic and visual notation, which allowed both of us the ability to alter the direction of the work on the fly by adjusting the sound, shifting the color, or by changing the brush stroke.

We based most of this method of communication on Emily's chromesthesiawhich allows her the unique ability to see sound as specific colors, textures, and shapes.

Verstehen

Our first set of performances, entitled Verstehen , premiered in July of 2017 at the Link & Pin Gallery  in Austin, Texas. The performance series was produced by Lindsay Doleshal and En Route Productions .

The technical complexity of the performances evolved over the 5 nights, with each event giving a specific artist more control over the direction of the work.  This approach was directly linked to our idea of creating an artistic conversation, one where each artist had ability at various times to directly influence the other's decisions.

At the end of each performance, we held a Q/A with the audience in order to get feedback and to discuss the various components of the piece. Once the work was completed, it was installed in the gallery for viewing. The audio from the performance was accessible through headphones beneath the painting.

Verstehen: West Coast Tour

As we neared the end of our first performance series, we both realized that there were alot more ideas we wanted to explore regarding this unique collaboration.   That is where you come in!  Our goal this fall is to take this performance on tour to the west coast - starting here in Austin and working our way up to Seattle, WA. We are already in the process of booking events at universities, performance spaces and art galleries.  The biggest hurdle for us is finding a reliable vehicle, the gas to get from venue to venue, and to pay for materials.

To have the ability to share this very unique and evolving performance with other communities would be a true gift, and our hope is that through this experience, we can continue to push the boundaries of truly interactive performance art.  We would be so grateful for any help and support you might be able to give.  Of course, we have some really cool things we'd love to share with you if you are interested in helping us achieve this goal!
Below is a list of donation tiers we have created - each one has unique gifts we would love to share with you to show our gratitude for your support.

We will be continually updating this page with specifics about our tour and will keep you in the loop regarding bookings as we get closer to our goal.  We are very excited to be sharing this unique project with you, and we look forward to taking this work to the next level!

Thank you!!
