Life and health can sometimes take long-hard detours before connecting us to our planned destination. Detours slow us down, but they aren’t designed to stop our travels. Case & point, cancer tends to have a way of derailing life toward a road of sickness, pain, and piles of medical expenses. My amazing friend, Veronica, is sadly familiar with this road as she and her family have been impacted by cancer and all the devastating detours/ obstacles /distractions this disease delivers to the doorstep of so many families. Veronica was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and immediately had a bi-lateral mastectomy, only to be have it return a year later… this time stage 4 with metastasis to her bones and lymph nodes.
Veronica has endured countless rounds of chemotherapy, hormone therapy as well as targeted therapy. Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket medical expenses for ongoing treatments are expensive and some are not covered at all. Recently, she had to go without her bone metastases treatment due to cost…a treatment vital to preventing fractures and preventing further growth of the cancer in her bones. Those who know Veronica, know that she has always been [and still is] a very hard worker and one of the most easy-going and selfless individuals on the planet! This detour is by no means a hard-stop – Veronica loves life and has no desire to give up on the road that leads her to VICTORY.
