Vera Fund : Bikes for Nepal Women

VERA FUND MISSION:
The mission of Lena Vera is to empower women around the world and to encourage all girls feel modern, confident, and bold. The Vera Fund gives 100% of funds to organizations that educate and empower women in need around the world.

PROJECT:
This project will give bikes to 150 poor girls (8-12 std.) in southern Nepal where they are forced to walk at least 5-12 kilometers one way for the nearest school. Unfortunately, many women are sexually assaulted on their way to or from school. Because of this, many women fear walking to school. Bikes will ensure that girls have better access to education and will decrease the chances of women becoming victims of sexual assault. Her continuous engagement in school means less chances of her being victims of child marriage at home, and her bike means less chances of being assaulted or kidnapped on the way to or from school. Once the goal is reached, 100% of the funds will be donated to the official fund, verified by the organization Girls Not Brides. This project is coordinated by the Janaki Women Awareness Society.

SOLUTION
This project will provide a cycle gift to 150 poor school girls. Additionally, they will be provided with a school bag, an air pump and other simple tools to repair their cycle.

LONG-TERM IMPACT:
The voices of Nepali girls are often lost in the typical male-dominated culture of Nepal. An educated girl is mature and confident enough to determine her career, marriage, and her role at home and in society. She can avoid abusive child marriage and can influence her family to make better decisions for women. Empowering and educating women and their families in Nepal will perpetuate a cultural shift that will have an increasingly positive impact for Nepali women. A bike will help educate, protect, and empower a girl in Nepal.

ORGANIZATION:
This fund will donate directly to the project created by the Janaki Women Awareness Society.
