<div>Proyecto de Reforestación Chico Mendes (Chico Mendes Reforestation Project) is a community-run nonprofit based in the Guatemalan highland village of Pachaj. What began as three friends planting trees on the weekends in 1998 has grown into a family of over 3600 local students and more than 1000 international volunteers who have worked with the project since. With each tree planted, soil bag filled, and weed cleared, we are proving that small steps of change today are what shape the future.

<div>Led by our founder Armando, Chico Mendes offers many opportunities to engage with, ranging from fieldwork (seed collecting, tree planting), tree nursery maintenance, project management and outreach, community homestays with immersive K'iche' language lessons, guided hikes, 16 different courses on topics ranging from Guatemalan history to climate change to Mayan cosmovision and much more. Programs can be tailored to the interests of educators/students and two of our guides are fluent in English now. Armando can also connect you with other grassroots programs in Guatemala, too! Exciting new projects for the future include a medicinal garden for ancestrally Maya flora. The garden will be placed in an area of the forest that is to be established as a sacred space dedicated to one of the last Maya battle leaders.

<div>We provide reforestation employment to community members in need while aiming to plant all 40,000 saplings. We offer our local youth the opportunity to plant trees for education scholarships and create safe jobs that follow social distancing guidelines. Chico Mendes faced significant obstacles as a result of COVID-19 and yet, we managed to not only survive but thrive: 18,000 trees were planted EVERY YEAR of the pandemic!

<div>However, Chico Mendes is facing major challenges once again. The recent 30+ days of disruptions stemming from state push-back in recognizing newly-elected President Arévalo has led to the cancellation of two major international, collaborative projects with universities, resulting in 24,000 unplanted trees. With groups unable to come to us, we need to replant all by ourselves. But with less hands available and a mountainous terrain prone to landslides that poses a significant challenge to the replanting process, we are struggling to meet our goals. This is why we are seeking to fundraise for a four-wheel-drive truck to assist the Chico Mendes team in carrying more trees through mountainous terrain to get on track with our replanting mission.

<div>This is a labor of love. People are taking lower salaries so that everyone has some to go around and sometimes, work is done out of the goodness of one's heart rather than payment, but we need your help. This vehicle would directly help our community sow the seeds of environmental and Indigenous justice.

<div>Proyecto de Reforestación Chico Mendes es una organización sin fines de lucro administrada por la comunidad con sede en el pueblo de Pachaj, en las tierras altas de Guatemala. Lo que comenzó como tres amigos plantando árboles los fines de semana en el año 1998 se ha convertido en una familia de más de 3.600 estudiantes locales y más de 1.000 voluntarios internacionales que han trabajado con el proyecto desde entonces. Con cada árbol plantado, cada bolsa de tierra llena y cada maleza eliminada, estamos demostrando que los pequeños pasos de cambio de hoy son los que dan forma al futuro.

<div>Dirigido por nuestro fundador Armando, Chico Mendes ofrece muchas oportunidades para participar, que van desde trabajo de campo (recolección de semillas, plantación de árboles), mantenimiento de viveros de árboles, gestión y extensión de proyectos, alojamiento en familias comunitarias con lecciones inmersivas del idioma k'iche', caminatas guiadas, 16 diferentes cursos sobre temas que van desde la historia de Guatemala hasta el cambio climático, la cosmovisión maya y mucho más. Los programas se pueden adaptar a los intereses de los educadores/estudiantes y dos de nuestros guías ahora hablan inglés con fluidez. ¡Armando también puede conectarte con otros programas de base en Guatemala! Nuevos y emocionantes proyectos para el futuro incluyen un jardín medicinal para la flora ancestral maya.
