Veda Coleman: Widow Relief Fund

If you're reading this then you know my mother, Veda Coleman, is a now 65-year-old piano teacher who has been imparting her musical knowledge to students for over a decade. Who you may not have known quite as well was her husband Emmett Vincent who recently passed on May 12th, 2016 from brain cancer.

Though his presence was often very understated, Emmett was the reason why my mom was even able to start teaching piano, taking the burden of financial provider, working overtime, and whatever it took when she decided to stop working and persue a career as a full time piano teacher. If it were not for him, my mom would not have the legacy of students she has today.

Emmett not only worked hard every day, he also cooked, cleaned, and he helped take care of my mother after she was diagnosed with renal failure. Even after going through back surgery and brain surgery at the end of 2014 he still did much of the cooking and house work up until a few months before his death. He was a very strong man.

Emmet's last days were very hard. Mom and I did every thing we could to make him comfortable but it was tough to see such a strong man fade away in his last days.

He did so much to take care of mom in life, but now that he is gone, it seems that there is nothing left as far as funds. Unfortunately there was no life insurance, and they had very little savings. Now my mom is living only off of what little she gets from social security and because of all that has been happening both with her health and Emmett's health, she hasn't been able to teach much over the past several months.

Funeral expenses, medical expenses, and just general living expenses are begining to pile up and although we are trying to help, I know it's not enough.  She rents the house they lived in for over 20 years, so there isn't even that to leverage.  With Emmett gone it's also time for her to move out of that  house to someplace that she can live independantly despite her health limitations and hopefully still continue to teach.

My mother would never ask for a handout from anyone and normally I wouldn't either, at least for myself, but for her, seeing all she's beein through, struggling with Emmett's illness and death and now life after, I am reaching out to friends, family and her students on her behalf.

If you know my mother you know that she taught  for years at a rate much lower than any other piano teacher because she wanted her students to be able to afford it. She didn't want to see talent go to waste, she often taught kids for free when their parnets could no longer afford even her lowered price. She valued her student's musical talents, she put on recitals using money out of her own pocket, she truly loved her students and I know for a fact that her students love her.

For this reason, I'm reaching out to all of you, to help my mother so that she is not feeling the pressure and weight of all these expenses,  The amount I'm hoping to raise would be enough to offset the funeral cost and some medical expenses, anything more would go to help mom moving forward, to help her find and pay for a place to live, to help with moving expenses and medical expenses, to give her some breathing room.

Pleae know that as her son, I am doing everything I can to help her too. I'm not asking for others to do something I'm not doing.  I just recognize that it's not enough so I'm reaching out on her behalf.  Please know every penny will go to her and her expenses. I'm not looking to be reimbursed for anything I've done, I'm just looking to help my mom.  I'd like her to be able to continue her legacy as a piano teacher, and not let all of Emmet's hard work be in vain now that he's gone.

I'd like to keep this a secret from her until at least everyone has had a chance to give. I know that's probably not feasible, but please try.
