Cam's Recovery Campaign #helpforcam

Donation protected
My name is Rachel van Bommel and I’ve started this campaign for my brother in law, Cameron, who had a devastating accident in his studio involving a table saw and the fingers on his right hand.

The afternoon of September 19 was pretty average for Cameron MacLean.  An artist and craftsman, Cam was working in his studio space in rural Nova Scotia.  That day, Cam was working on filling some orders and finishing up some magazine racks in the studio.  Trained as a furniture designer and maker, Cameron creates small scale fine, functional interior wooden accents for the home and ships them to customers worldwide through his online shop, Offcut Studio.  https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/offcutstudio

As he was working, in a split second, the unthinkable happened.  A routine cut, a powerful saw, and an amputation accident that will make things very different for Cam going forward.  For a person that makes his living with his hands, he is going to have a long road ahead of him.  He has been forced to shutter his shop temporarily, which means he has no income to support himself during his recovery. Self-employed and with very little in personal savings, Cam has no insurance (such as Employment Insurance) to rely on at this time.

Cam is an active member of his local craft and design community, including participation in various shows and exhibitions such as the Halifax Crafters Society markets, The City of Craft show in Toronto, and collaborative projects for the Interior Design Show, which he has worked on with his partner and wife, Anneke van Bommel (my sister).  I can’t imagine two people better suited for one another; Anneke is a self-employed artist as well, which makes their family income situation extra stressful at this time.

Please help us in our effort to support Cameron during this difficult time.  There is going to be a significant amount of costs associated with his accident, including travel for treatment, physiotherapy, and additional day to day expenses incurred while dealing with his injury.  He has already had surgery in an attempt to save his index finger (unfortunately he has lost the middle finger) and we are hoping that procedure will ultimately be successful (it is too soon to say for sure).

Cam lives in a pretty rural place, so any appointments or therapy will have to take place in Halifax, which means a lot of driving. Any little bit helps.  Thank you.
