Kidney Transplant for Casey

During the summer of 2014, my 13 year old niece Cassandra Luetke left her parents behind and came to Sacramento from Germany hoping for an opportunity to get a better education and be around her mother's family for support in doing so. It took a few months to get adjusted, finally settling in Eureka with her Uncle Kevin and Aunt Stephanie.

She has now been with them for over a year. She is enjoying high school, getting good grades and participating in activities she loves. Casey has grown into a strong, smart beautiful 15 year old with aspirations and dreams of college and career.

Recently, Casey started feeling pains in her stomach that would come and go. On Thursday March 17, 2016 Casey went to the hospital to see what was happening. They took tests and blood work and quickly determined her kidneys were injured/scarred, failing and she was flown to UCSF for further testing.

After a few days on a strict diet she had a kidney biopsy and surgery to insert a device needed for dialysis. She was weak but in good spirits, spending her time on her IPAD and watching movies. She has been amazingly strong during the continuous needles, testing, prodding. poking, and questions from dozens of doctors.

The doctors have determined that Casey's kidneys are so seriously damaged that she will need dialysis until a kidney comes available. A kidney transplant. Caseys mother, Heather has now been cleared to donate her own kidney.

By June Casey started dialysis. Stephanie and Kevin received training and they administer dialysis every night for Casey. They travel to San Francisco frequently for doctor appointments.

The kidney transplant team has now cleared Casey for transplant, setting the date for the week of November 28.

Casey's 16th birthday is in November. She hopes and dreams she can celebrate her 16th birthday in style with a Japanese themed party.

We feel that planning for a big birthday party will help keep her mind focused and positive before her kidney transplant.

Thank you for your positive thoughts and generosity.
