My name is Vashti and I am an international student from Barbados studying International Business at Humber College. I am raising money to help me pay for my tuition for college.
I'm in the final year of my Bachelors Degree program and currently facing a lot of financial challenges that are prohibiting me from paying for my semester.
I grew up in Barbados where I completed my high school education. Prior to coming to Canada, I started studying at University at home and eventually took some time off to figure out what I was really passionate about doing and making sure I chose a career path that I would love. During this period I worked and saved and eventually moved to Canada to study International Business, a program that I really fell in love with. I have always had a passion for business but wasn't quite sure how I wanted that to materialize in my future, I can confidently say my three years at Humber so far has really helped me to shape and figure out what that will look like. Now I'm in my final year and so much closer to achieving that goal.
I work as an International Student Ambassador helping other International Students who have just moved to Canada and are new to the college experience and living abroad some of them for the first time in their lives, I love helping them and providing the help I wish I had when I first moved here. I also volunteer as the Senior Peer Mentor for the Connect program here at Humber and part of my role is assisting students by making sure they get the assistance they need and providing guidance to first-semester international students which helps them get involved more in the community.
Additionally, I work part-time as a sales associate trying to make enough to support myself with rent, food, and other necessities.
With both jobs that I work, I earn an income from working but not nearly enough to be able to support myself and pay my tuition. I am supported by my family, they help a lot but unfortunately it is not enough.
It is vital for me to find a way to continue and stay in school since my immigration status in Canada is tied to my study permit and my ability to work in Canada which helps me support myself. Should I not remain in school, all these areas will be greatly affected.
The tuition per semester is $9,395, which is the international fee, so my family and I have been able to pay $3,774. I am currently short $5,621.
I've been reaching out to several people and departments on campus and have applied for some scholarships that are available but the options are very slim since I am an International student and unfortunately we are not offered the same financial aid.
I will need to pay the remaining balance by the third week of November.
I will be so thankful if you could help me continue my education here in Canada and my hopes for the future.
