Vashon Byrd Fund

Donation protected
It is with heavy heart that I launch the Vashon Byrd Memorial Fund as Vashon is in rapidly declining health, resulting complications from a massive stroke in June 2017. On the advice and counsel of Vashon’s physicians and care professionals, the best course of action is to begin to plan for the inevitable as it has been made clear that his medical condition is terminal and deteriorating.

Vashon is my older brother and only sibling. And, for his entire 77 years of life he has been a resident of San Antonio, Texas as well as an altruistic champion for people and causes. Vashon’s tireless civic activism, community involvement and political advocacy (City of SA, Bexar County, State of Texas) have stretched the better of 50 plus years. There’s not a mayor, city manager, city councilmember, county commissioner, state representative, member of US Congress, governor or White House administration that hasn’t been influenced by Vashon’s voice on a myriad of topics that have impact on the lives of the people of his community and this country, especially with regards to issues that affect African Americans.

Vashon’s legacy can be measured in many ways, tangible and intangible; however, his true imprint can be garnered by the collective interactions of those of us that have known, loved, respected and crossed paths with Vashon throughout his life.

So it is with the knowledge that my brother’s life is nearing completion that I have started the Vashon Byrd Memorial Fund to assist with Vashon’s end-of-life matters, primarily his funeral and burial expenses.

Vashon granted me power of attorney over his affairs, and as such I will be managing his funeral and burial arrangements. The Vashon Byrd Memorial Fund is meant as a tribute to his life, and out of desire to grant him an honorable funeral and burial. I am hereby asking anyone that knew Vashon to please assist with a donation.

Based on quotes that we have received from San Antonio funeral homes and Meadowlawn Cemetery, Vashon’s end-of-life expenses are greater than his financial capacity as his finances are being used for his nursing home expenses, which has been ongoing since July 2017.

Vashon’s funeral and burial expenses will cost approximately $12,000. And, we are looking to raise the funds immediately so that we can pre-arrange Vashon’s funeral and burial. While we hope and pray that Vashon will be with us for as long as possible, it has been made clear by his physicians that we should make arrangements as to be prepared as soon as possible.
