Help August Achieve Her Dreams

Donation protected
August is an 24 year old writer and artist. She has Metatropic Dwarfism/Skeletal Dysplasia, a genetic condition that severely affects the skeletal system. August has had 8 surgeries in her short lifetime.  Her struggles are great, but she meets the challenges of life with humor, grace and glamour.  She is the bravest and most intelligent daughter I could have ever wished for. She is my hero.

August published her first book in 2019.  She's currently working on her third novel.  She's also a very talented artist.  Her writing and art is inspired by travel and all her best ideas come from daydreaming during long car rides.  One day she would like to write and direct movies.   As for me, I want to show her the world,  not allow her to be cooped up in the house all the time where depression lurks.  Summer is here and we would love to be just like any normal family.  We want to get out and do things and travel, visit family and explore the beautiful state we live in.  Even something as simple and normal as hanging out with friends is a challenge.

August has never been able to walk and received her first power wheelchair when she was two years old. As a single mother and her full-time caretaker I have never been able to afford a handicap van for her. We have made do with a regular minivan, using a portable ramp with which I have to transfer August into a regular seat and drive the chair up the back of the van. This has become a safety issue for several reasons. August has become too heavy to lift safely into the seat,  This is exhausting if we make more than one stop/trip somewhere.  The chair has no tie downs and slides into the back of the passenger seat August sits in when the slightest amount of brakes are applied. The chair buckles and “flies” out of the back of van, and has gone over the side several times.  And very importantly, the current van we have is very old and needs a lot of repairs I can't afford to bring it up to an acceptable safety level. Her chair is 300 lbs. and is not easily manipulated into and out of a vehicle.

Being able to buy a new wheelchair ramp van would open up life for August and allow her to pursue her dreams.
