Vandals Hit Alberni Pacific Railway

The Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society has been hit by several random acts of vandalism this summer.
In Port Alberni, two boys were caught "red-handed" by the RCMP at the "Alberni Pacific Railway" Roundhouse. They were just completing a destructive rampage through two passengers coaches normally pulled by the "No. 7", a 1929 Baldwin steam locomotive, which is currently being restored by our dedicated volunteer boilermakers.
The vandals broke into the two closed coaches, smashing every window, discharging 8 of the 9 fire extinguishers and making a general mess. The two coaches were dedicated to two railroaders who trained the next generation, Richard H. Grandy who was a retired APL locomotive engineer, and Edward H. Sharpe who was a retired CPR conductor.
In July, unknown vandals destroyed some passenger seats and smashed two windows in our other open coaches.
It is going to take a lot of volunteer work to replace the windows, upholstery and safety equipment. The WVIIHS's many volunteers are trying to get the heritage railway operational again. We do not want these random acts of vandalism to set us back.
