Valor's Emergency Medical Care

Last year as we were walking the halls of ACS we stumbled across Valor. He was dejected but sweet and suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Unfortunately he was not one of the six dogs we pulled to make room for Hurricane Harvey refugees as he was returned to his owners. Fast forward 8 months and Valor found himself back at ACS; 20 lbs lighter, heavy heart worm positive and suffering from a broken leg. We pulled him into rescue and vowed to make sure no one failed this kind fella ever again.


Since his rescue, Valor was misdiagnosed with hypothyroidism as he was constantly lethargic and not putting on weight. Thanks to the help of his foster mom's 'round the clock care he bounced back, started making progress and we thought he was out of the woods.


Last night Valor took a turn for the worst and it was discovered he has IMHA or Canine Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. With IMHA the immune system destroys its own red blood cells. His body still produces red blood cells to replace the destroyed cells but once they are released into circulation, the immune system mistakenly recognizes them as something foreign and destroys them. Valor received a blood transfusion and fluids to bring his 104 fever down but has a long way to go to get his blood cells in check. We have to pull our resources and come up with $2-$4k for treatment ASAP. Until then, he has a 50/50 chance of survival.
