We are the women of The Valkyries, a new dragon boating team in Portland, Oregon. Our 30 team members come from all walks of life but we share a common goal: to win the 2015 Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race, while fundraising for women's advocacy organizations. This season, we are thrilled to paddle in support of Rose Haven , a one-stop community and intervention center for women and children experiencing the trauma of abuse and homelessness in Portland.
We are extra excited about this opportunity to support local women because this spring the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund will provide a 100% match for any new donors to Rose Haven at the $500, $1000 and $2500 level.
Our spring fundraising campaign wil culminate at the Reigning Roses Walk . Rose Haven's annual Mother's Day Fundraiser. Please join us that day in support of Rose Haven, or consider helping us fundraise in honor of the women in your life.
Our team takes its name from the Valkyries of Norse mythology, the female warriors who played a central role in determining who was victorious and who was defeated in battle. We hope to emboy the strength, independence, and intensity of Viking women, both mythological and historical, to paddle towards victory.
Beyond our athletic goals, we are committed to holistic well-being, and to using our strength as a group to support other women. We work out three times a week on land throughout the winter to prepare our bodies to paddle the massive dragon boats. Once we hit the water, our energies unite and we are unstoppable.
