Who are we?
Vagabond Press is a small literary press based in Sydney, Australia. For two decades we have published a range of established and emerging poets from Australia and more recently Asia-Pacific and the Americas. Our books have won many of the major literary prizes in Australia, been praised by critics and taught at universities around the world.
Why go fund me?
Unlike the majority of poetry publishers in Australia, we do not have university support or a university salary to draw from to cover the costs of publishing our writers' books. We believe poetry is essential to culture and that the books we have published over twenty years have helped expand the range of contemporary literature and added to the inner lives and imaginations of readers. We are dedicated to seeing new work into English from other languages, especially within Asia Pacific, to facilitate connection, community and a recognition of the common ground, joys and struggles shared across cultures.
We're not entirely sure what the future holds for the press. Surviving hand-to-mouth for twenty years, means we're never sure if each run might be the last. That said, we aim to keep making books as long as there are readers. We're deeply proud of the grassroots support from our readers, writers and booksellers that has kept the press going now over two decades.
What will donations be used for?
This campaign will fund the ongoing costs of running the press and bringing out new collections.

While we didn't hit our initial target ($10,800) to cover costs for the first two collections listed on this campaign, we went ahead anyway. Thanks to everyone who donated! Both Petra White's 'Cities' and Dan Disney's 'accelerations & inertias' went to press in May and will be released in July 2021.
Petra White, 'Cities ' (July 2021)
'Cities' makes playful and lyrical incursions into myth to explore the nature of grief for a mother while becoming a mother, and the difficulties of love, ranging from the extended sequence Persephone at 40 to a piercing series of poems about the death of White’s mother. A series of fragmentary ‘journal’ poems spanning from London to Berlin, arises in part from the tensions and strangeness of prolonged lockdown in both cities.
Petra White was born in Adelaide in 1975 and currently lives in Berlin with her husband and daughter. Her previous full-length collections include 'The Incoming Tide' (2007), 'The Simplified World' (2010), 'A Hunger' (2014) and 'Reading for a Quiet Morning' (2017). She received the Grace Leven Prize in 2010, and her work is currently included on the senior school syllabus in Victoria.
Dan Disney's 'accelerations & inertias' (July 2021)
'Dan Disney's 'accelerations & inertias' is a remarkable work of self-critiquing, inverting hybridity. This is a restive book in which new skyscrapers and museums, temples and consumer fetishism are complementary, and not necessarily in tension. In these ‘distillations’ there is no quietism, and the ‘museum of the future’ is a question with fear and doubt in the air about it. The key to this work – the best of Disney’s, I think – remains the critique of a crisis of capital, a deep respect for environment, a deep respect for culture and its complexities, a wonder mixed with a toughness of observation and understanding of what being an observer means.' Dan Disney previous full-length collections are 'and then when the' (2011), 'Mannequin’s Guide to Utopias' (2013), and 'Either, Orpheus' (2016). Alongside an experimental verse novella, 'Report from a border' (2016, co-devised with John Warwicker), he is the editor of 'Beyond Babel' (2014), and co-edited 'Writing to the Wire' (2016, with Kit Kelen) and 'New Directions in Contemporary Australian poetry' (2021, with Matthew Hall). He teaches with the English Literature Program at Sogang University, in Seoul.
