Global Medical Brigades : Ghana

What Am I doing:
My name is Vincent Hua and I in a team of 25 brigaders from UT that is planning on traveling to Ghana in January 2018 to help promote sustainability by mentoring and teaching healthcare and help build physical structures for locals to promote self development.

Why am I doing this:
Simply put, I want to be a part of an organization that can make an impact in the world. While I was in Australia, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local nursing home. During my time there I learned two important lessons. One, I learned that no matter where you are or who you are in the world, when you are sick or old and cannot take care of yourself, the healthcare you need is the same as anyone else, anywhere in the world. Two, I learned that I, as a single college student, could make a huge difference in someone’s life just simply by visiting them a few times a week, as I was the cause of someone’s happiness in their rough times. Even though I have left, I will always remember what he taught me and he will always remember how I made him smile. I mention this experience because it made me realize that if I could make an impact with such a small action, imagine what I could do for people that don’t have access to all these facilities and care. This is why I joined Global Brigades, I want to have the opportunity to make an impact in someone’s life for the rest of their life. The global brigade’s mission and vision is to empower volunteers to facilitate sustainable solutions in under resourced communities while fostering local cultures. This ties in perfectly with what I want as I know my contribution may be small but with many small contributions hope grows, and so does education, not only for the present but for the future.

How:
In the 10 days I will be in Ghana, I will be working alongside physicians to help teach/treat the locals, some of whom have walked miles and miles just to recieve treatment. I will also interact with locals and raise awareness about the importance of healthcare and how they can keep it up even after the brigade is gone.

The Goal:
Do my part to help grow sustainability globally.  Webster’s dictionary definition of sustainability states it is “the ability to maintain at a certain rate or level.” However to me, sustainability means much more. To me, it’s about development that meets the standards of the present but do not compromise the standards of future generations. It’s about the big picture and how we can improve the lives of everyone everywhere, but also about the smaller picture and how every little action counts. We, as insignificant as we think we may be, can make a difference. In the small picture we can start at the local level, helping bring innovative tech to help communities gain access to nutrition and education, which leads to the big picture and evolves to a global scale as our small actions can ring and start a chain of events that only get better with time. In my opinion, sustainability is a lifestyle and a choice not only for the people and communities we help but for us, as we can take the limited resources we have to make a difference that can last for a long time to come.

What you can do to Help:
To accomplish this goal of mine is sadly not cheap and as a college student, mission fees and plane tickets can be very daunting.  Any contribution no matter how small or large to my cause would be greatly appreciated.
