Hundreds of Muslim Uyghur students in Egypt with resident permits are currently being rounded up to be deported to China, where they will be subject to persecution, imprisonment, torture, and death sentences. Their crime? Being Uyghur and studying Islam. #SaveUyghurStudents
In its attempt to "crackdown on Islamic extremism", China has significantly tightened its security measures and prohibition of religious practice in East Turkestan (aka Xinjiang, occupied by China). Chinese authorities are now seeking the return of thousands of innocent Uyghur students abroad in "wide sweeps" to extend this crackdown.
It has been reported that all airports in Egypts are preventing Uyghurs from leaving the country. Some Uyghur students have already been deported, and the remaining are either in detention awaiting deportation or in hiding within Egypt’s borders. Several that we know managed to escape to Turkey, but are currently homeless or in extreme financial hardship.
Therefore the funds we collect will go to providing shelter, food and other support to the Uyghurs who have already managed to flee Egypt. It will also go to provide those in hiding with necessities (e.g. food, room, board) while we work with nonprofit human rights organizations to pressure Egypt and China to stop the deportations and detentions.
The funds will be collected through Uyghur Youth Campaign, a 501(c) nonprofit based in the US, and will (for now) be directly delivered to the Uyghur students who fled to Turkey by one of its members, Aydin Anwar, who has been in Istanbul. She is connected with these refugees through Munevver Ozuygur, an Uyghur activist based in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul.
Please donate and help spread awareness. Do not remain silent as these young men and women are sent off to be detained, tortured, imprisoned and perhaps even killed in China. They need our help.
