In lieu of a Christmas Card this year, Matt and I have decided to work with our network of incredible friends and family to make a difference in the lives of Utah refugees.
In the wake of an election that has left our refugee brothers and sisters anxious and unsure about their new home in the US, let's send them the strong, resounding message that they are welcome, they are wanted, and they will be given what they need to rebuild their lives. You may know that each year, thousands of men, women, and children are forced to flee violence and persecution; they are welcomed into the safety and freedom of the US. These individuals have survived against incredible odds – starvation, torture, human trafficking, government abuse. Parents send their children to the US, knowing they may never see them again, but believing they will have a better future in the US.
The International Rescue Committee in Utah is asking for our help. "The IRC responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future." One way we can make a difference is by donating bundles of essential items to help refugees re-establish their homes and families.
My employer, BrainStorm, Inc , is seeding this effort with an initial $100; Matt and I are matching their donation with another $100. We are asking for matched, greater or smaller donations to build high-need bundles of essentials that will be placed with new refugee individuals and families in Utah. We are asking for all donations to be made before Thanksgiving Day (Nov 24) so we can take advantage of post-holiday sales to build the bundles. Each bundle costs about $100 to build. With your donations, we will stretch each dollar to purchase the items and build these kits. Our goal is to donate 15 of these bundles to refugees in need by raising $1500.

2 Mixing Bowls, Basic Kitchen Utensil Set, 9x13 Metal Baking Dish, Cutting Board, Can Opener, Small Alarm Clock, Family-Sized First Aid Kit, Shower Curtain Liner, Shower Curtain Rings, 1 pad paper and pens, 1 box of 4 light bulbs, 4 rolls paper towels, toilet brush, 2 bottles toilet bowl cleaner, 4 sponges, small trash can, 50+ tall garbage bags, IKEA blue bag with zipper to hold everything.
Adult Work Bag
Backpack, reusable water bottle, insulated lunch bag, watch, planner, notebook and pen, mini first aid kit, umbrella, gift card for work clothes/shoes for $50.
Home Necessities Bundle
Multi-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, sponges, scrub brush, toilet cleaner, dish soap, hand soap, paper towels, wash cloths, dish towels, trash bags, laundry detergent, small trash can OR a small cleaning bucket.
If you are looking for opportunities to make your voice heard in the current, turbulent political climate, and to give to others in need during this Christmas season, we would love to couple your donation with ours.
