Over the last 26 weeks, fellows from all over the United States have formed relationships with Brazilian students from Macapa, Porto Velho, and Parnaiba. Through social media and in-person teaching, US-Brazil Connect (in Portuguese - Conexao Mundo) creates a collaborative cultural exchange where American fellows and Brazilian students are pushed far outside of their comfort zones. The result is energized students who have increased their English, leadership, and teamwork skills. For the fellows, we go through the invaluable experience of learning from, teaching, and connecting with students from a culture far different from our own.
I feel blessed to have the opportunities that US-Brazil Connect has given me, and I hope the Conexao Mundo program continues to impact lives for many years to come. My fellowship provided training, airfare, plus hotel stay and meals for three weeks. The intention of this fundraiser is to give back to US-Brazil Connect so they can continue to provide fellowships in the future. No price can be put on the wealth of experience embedded in the Conexao Mundo program.
Last year, the community donated over $1400 to support this year's fellows! Due to your generous donations, my team (Grace, Lauren, Joey, Victoria, and myself) were able to serve in Porto Velho, Rondonia! Our goal is to raise an additional $600 to reach $2000 (overall) and help next year's fellows engage in this transformative program.
MUITO OBRIGADO :)
"The transformation I saw deeply touched me. The three week program is structured by themes. First there is "Team Building", then "Career/Profession", and finally "Social Change". Week 1, Day 1, saying "how are you?' to each other was difficult... They were scared, nervous and shy.
By week 3, students were speaking in sentences about the problems that they were passionate about changing in the world. They discussed issues like domestic violence, child abuse and government corruption in English. Each one of them encouraged each other to chase their dreams, find a fulfilling passion, and have a positive impact.
US-Brazil Connect is an English program and cultural exchange deeply rooted in human connection and change making. Leaving my team was one of the hardest experiences I have had. I love them and I hope that future fellows can experience what I was lucky enough to experience."
