USA STRONG FOR VETERANS:
According to the Department of Defense statistics 253,000 service members have been diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Of those deployed to Iraq, 991 sustained wounds requiring amputation. Of those deployed to Afghanistan, 724 sustained wounds requiring amputation.  According to the Veterans Administration 835,000 veterans who went to war following the 911 attacks suffer from combat-related PTSD.

Due to these issues and lack sufficient mental health intervention, the military veteran suicide rate is over 22 PER DAY!

These are staggering statistics that we all would like to change! In order to RAISE AWARENESS about the suicide rate of our military veterans, and to raise FUNDS to help provide much needed service dogs to our brave military men and women, Katie Strong will be running across the United States. Beginning June 2018 she will run 30 to 40 miles per day from the West Coast to Arlington National Monument, then to the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. At the end of the run each day she will plant 22 United States flags to represent those lost through suicide that day.

One of the most effective ways to provide intervention for a veteran suffering from PTSD and/or devastating combat related injury is through service dogs. Service dogs are trained to complete many complex tasks that are intended to provide support to veterans when they experience difficulty with their symptoms of PTSD (Foreman & Crosson, 2012).

A service dog can turn on the lights to interrupt a veteran's nightmare, remind the veteran to take medication by alerting him or her at the proper times, and can even prevent a veteran from being startled by nudging him or her gently when someone is unexpectedly approaching or by blocking a person who is coming too close to the veteran (Esnayra & Love, 2005). Service dogs provide support and increased means of coping with the associated symptoms such as hypervigilance, fear, nightmares, the fight-or-flight response, and impaired memory. This allows the veteran to get back out into the world, and helps prevent the isolation that can lead to depression and suicide.

Current statistics show that there are literally thousands of military veterans hoping to have a service dog, but due to funding the waiting list is long. So let’s help out! The more money raised through this GoFundMe effort, the more service dogs can be provided.  100% of funds raised through this effort are to nonprofit 501 (c)3  specifically for funding  military service dogs equipment and training.
