Help us with Local Plastic Recycling - DOBA Studio

Donation protected

Hiya everyone!

We are Magda and Bartek! Together we would like develop our  DOBA Studio in Edinburgh, where we collect plastic waste from local community and would love to organize workshops during which participants will be able to learn about the whole process of recycling plastic and during practice part they would make they own unique products using our machines. And that's our way to fight against plastic pollution!

Our mission:

Considering what humanity has done to our planet, our goal is to create and educate based on materials that no one needs anymore. We want to give them new life and at least have positive influence on our planet.  We hope that by taking part in this process and seeing that recycling can be nice and pleasant, more people will change their habits and at the same time the wee world around them.

Unfortunately, as two young people, we are not able to gather the necessary funds to do it. We count on the support of the community for which care for the environment is important. Our studio is created exactly for the local community. To educate and provide a place of local plastic waste recycling point.

By supporting our initiative, you will really contribute to raising awareness among the  people about caring for the environment and in particular the problem of plastic pollution.

Our story:

It all began with cooperation with the Plastikowa Rewolucja  in Warsaw, which operate according to the idea of Precious Plastic . We want to implement it in Edinburgh because it seems to be a great solution for plastic pollution!

How do we want to process plastic?

We want to build three basic machines: Shredder, Extrusion  and Injection (already done).

Shredder crushes plastic bottles, caps or other larger waste into chips that are easier to handle later. [video]

Extrusion works a bit like a 3D printer, it produces a bundle of dissolved plastic that can be wrapped around freely creating, for example, bowls or vases. [video ]

Injection (the ready one, but still needs some upgrades) is used to produce plastic objects using ready-made molds, so that each of the objects will have an identical shape. We have already made some progress with that one with help from local welder and engineers :D [video ]

What will we use the money for?

️Building machines - £3000
️Workspace Renovation - £750
Business License and Permits - £250
Injection Molds - £500
Tools and Equipment - £1500
Rent for 6 months - £2000

What will be our impact?

‍‍‍The main impact on the local community will be increased awareness and education about the plastic waste problem and how it is impacting the ecosystem. Our products and workshops form a mix that makes the plastic problem tangible, as well as connect it to behavior change. By keeping track of the number of participants in the educational workshops, we have a clear and quantified way to measure our impact. For the Precious Plastic community, we will open-source our new products, molds and curriculum for our workshops through “How To’s” on the Precious Plastic community platform. This enables us to contribute back to the Precious Plastic community, which provided the open-source diagrams for the injection and shredder machine we are going to use.

In terms of helping the planet, we will be turning plastic waste that would have been land filled, burned, or floating in the ocean into new useful products. This has a direct environmental benefit by making sure this material is being used and valued instead of wasted. Also, the products that we sell will have a secondary effect on the user’s attitude towards plastic in their own life. We believe this will help them reduce their single-use plastic consumption and make them generally be more aware of their environmental impact. We will keep track of how many kilograms of plastic we recycle into new products to share our environmental impact measures with our followers and supporters. We will also use the number of kilos recycled to find the amount of CO2 saved from not using virgin plastic. We can also use these metrics when applying for future grants and social impact lending.

What have we done so far?

Back in Poland, we've been working on designation (Magda took that part) and engineering the mold for DOBA Watch.  It is a kind of manifesto of passing time, which we have less and less to provide any changes. It was a project to defend Magdas BA thesis. We managed to create couple of working prototypes (picture below) but we are still working on them.

We've rent a studio in Edinburgh Palette, number 6.07. We have our own Injection Machine, a space to store plastic waste and to basically work on our current and future project. (Leading workshops included)

We are also making and selling Hexagonal Coasters on our website and in local Cofee Shops in small amounts.
